BACKGROUND INFORMATION
IOM has played a major role in humanitarian shelter operations for many decades. IOM’s unique position as an intergovernmental organization allows it to work at scale in both natural disasters and conflict / complex contexts. In this capacity IOM works in both operations and coordination, and plays a strong role working with partners in support of national authorities. Since 2005, IOM has implemented Shelter and
NFI (Non Food Item) projects in more than 40 countries.
Over the course of 2018, IOM’s Shelter and NFI programmes reached over 4.1 million individuals affected by various types of disasters, working in 44 countries overall. Additionally, IOM had a significant coordination role under both formally activated clusters and in country shelter coordination mechanisms in 24 countries. IOM also takes an active role in the Global Shelter Cluster and the Shelter Sector at the global level.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the IOM Senior Shelter and Settlements Officer, and in accordance with the overall direction of the Shelter and Settlements Expert, the intern will focus on supporting the Shelter and Settlements team, IOM operations worldwide and other partners working in the logistics sector as well as shelter and settlements sector by helping through the duties and responsibilities detailed below.

Support in improving the project of global prepositioning of NFIs for emergency in coordination with relevant Units.

Support in the content development and final graphical production of tools, documents and if required audio-visual presentations relating to Shelter and Settlements.

Support global capacity building efforts within logistics, shelter and settlements.

Provide assistance in drafting project/programme proposals according to IOM and donor formats, as well as policies and tools for IOM shelter and logistics programme staff.

Support the management of operational pipeline assessments and operational planning (Setting up a base, procurement, communication, warehouse, transportation etc.).

Liaise with IOM’s field colleagues, donors and partners on relevant shelter/logistics issues, tools and initiatives.

Develop best practices and lessons learned and define platforms for the comparison of experiences and contributions to policy, innovation, and strategic thinking.

Assist the shelter team in the development of humanitarian strategies and resources, including database maintenance and information management.

Support the capturing, storing and sharing of humanitarian knowledge; analyse information received from IOM’s field offices.

Generate a number of relevant documents for IOM’s field offices, Shelter Cluster and Logistics Cluster stakeholders.

Perform such duties as may be assigned by the direct supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- University degree in the Social Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Law, Development Studies, Business Administration, or any related discipline;
- Strong background in logistics related field; practical commercial/professional experience in one of the logistics and ancillary sectors, construction, material control, transport and distribution management; experience in NFI distribution projects is an advantage.
- Computer literacy, especially database tools;
- Strong organizational skills;
- Ability to timely understand the Organization’s structure and portfolios;
- Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;
- Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines;
- Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently;
- Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English; working knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Arabic is advantageous;

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants to IOM internships must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
a) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
b) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in 4.1(a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
