Social Media Specialist: Government Relations and Communications

Position Summary:
This position will be responsible for developing and implementing NDI’s social media strategy, in consultation with the Digital Communications Manager. This position will work towards increasing NDI’s online presence, expanding audience reach on all social media platforms and improving NDI’s digital marketing efforts. The Social media specialist must have a deep understanding of how each social media channel works and how to optimize content to engage on those channels for maximum impact. This position is based in Washington, DC.

Essential Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Strategize and execute innovative social media projects to help grow and engage NDI’s audience
  • Develop content for NDI’s social media accounts, including campaigns that promote NDI success stories. This includes publishing and sharing daily content in various forms of media to include text, images, video and HTML. Assist copywriters and designers to ensure content is informative and appealing.
  • Manage a budget for promoting social media posts and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. Optimize posts and advertising to gain the broadest audience.
  • Create and manage Google AdWords campaigns and budget.
  • Create and manage social media content calendar
  • Define most important social media key performance indicators (KPIs) for each campaign. Develop measures to determine the success of each social media campaign, and develop creative responses to increase audience reach and engagement for each campaign.
  • Monitor search engine optimization (SEO) and user engagement and develop content optimization
  • Collaborate with colleagues from across the organization to ensure social media branding is consistent, including participating in training workshops to strengthen institutional knowledge in the seventy countries in which NDI has programming
  • Continuously improve by capturing and analyzing the appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices, and then implementing the information to broaden external outreach
  • Stay up to date with the latest social media best practices and technologies.

  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Incumbent operates under general direction, plans or coordinates work in accordance with established objectives.
  •   Incumbent regularly interacts with staff at all levels within NDI.
  • Incumbent regularly interacts with NDI partners, funders and other key program contacts.

Required Qualifications
Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, digital media, marketing or related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • A minimum of three years of experience as a Social Media Specialist or similar role. Portfolio of successful social media content and design campaign required.
  • Proven graphic design experience, and editing of photo, video and text required. Working knowledge and experience with design software (such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva) required.
  • Experience in managing Google Ad campaigns.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven track record in social media marketing
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person and through various communications media
  • Strong knowledge of web design, HTML, CSS and Drupal a plus
  • Excellent knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and other social media platforms required
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, particularly with  audience and stakeholders data and the ability to draw conclusions, determine options, and recommend next steps
  • Thorough understanding of SEO and social media KPIs
  • Knowledge of online marketing and understanding of major marketing channels
  • Nuanced understanding of audience, and experience working on complex, politically sensitive issues in dynamic environments
  • Basic proficiency in Google Suite tools preferred as well as Microsoft Office
  • Excellent multitasking skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Attention-to-detail and creating accurate work products with a focus on quality is a must
  • A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, internal and external to the organization.
  • Capacity to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team required

Certifications/Licenses
Google Ads certification is a plus.

Work Environment
This position generally is performed in an office environment and may be suitable for partial telework.
Occasional evening and weekend work may be required, as well as attendance at external events.
Some international travel is required in this role, approximately ___% to NDI field locations.  These locations often are in remote locations and may require significant time and varying modes of travel. Designated locations also may at times be considered less secure and with greater risk to NDI employees.

  • Seeing—to effectively use computer screen and for reading and interpreting printed materials, memos and other paperwork.

This is a union position to be represented by the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 2.

Candidates must be legally eligible and authorized to work in the U.S. NDI does not provide sponsorship. 

As a result of COVID19, this position will start in a remote capacity. However, when the office re-opens, this position will be based in our Washington, DC office. NDI does not cover relocation costs for this position.
