About the role

The IDMC is embarking on its 2030 strategy starting January 2021, The Special Adviser to the Director will offer support in steering the organisation through the implementation of the new strategy by providing strategic advisory support, ensuring smooth communication between the Director’s Office and other stakeholders as well as managing and coordinating the Director’s office agenda and external engagements.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Monitor political developments and engagement opportunities of relevance to the Director’s role and to IDMC’s mandate and objectives, and recommend opportunities to prioritise and to pursue;
  • Anticipate, assess and account for political and reputational risks associated with contested or divergent substantive and/or technical issues;
  • Provide advice to the Director and ensure the coordination of institutional responses to emergency, high priority, or other sensitive issues;
  • Maintain the reputation of the Director’s office through professional, friendly, timely, diplomatic, and respectful interactions internally and externally.
  • Keep the IDMC team and Management (MG) regularly informed of the Director’s engagements and priorities;
  • Organise and ensure the effective running of the MG team meetings, and monitor implementation of decisions.

As our prospective candidate, you have the following;

  • Master’s degree in international politics, development economics, displacement, and migration, or other relevant fields.
  • 7-10 years’ experience working in a political advisory role, preferably in an international diplomatic environment.
  • Sharp analytical skills and sound knowledge of international geopolitics, governance, and economics.
  • Knowledge and experience working on displacement or migration issues. Operational field experience a strong advantage.
  • Experience working with countries from the Global South, regional inter-governmental organisations, and South-South cooperation initiatives.
  • Proven experiencing organising state visits and field missions at high levels of representation.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English with the ability to synthesise information and present materials effectively and tailored to different audiences.
  • Fluency in English a must. Fluency in Arabic, French, or Spanish an advantage.
  • EU passport is an added advantage but not a must-have.
