Program Summary
The Coffee Resilience Program 2018-2020 dubbed Practice for Change (PFC) is a multi-country program on 2 main result areas as per Solidaridad Strategic vision: Good practices and Robust Infrastructure. The program supports 23,500 small and medium scale coffee farmers/producers across 3 East African countries; Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. The program was designed to address a myriad of challenges facing East African Coffee farmers which include; high costs of production, poor governance at cooperative level, decreasing coffee productivity, poor quality of coffee, erratic weather conditions, low income earned by coffee farmers, limited access to finance for coffee farmers and the need for a data driven sector. The program has been running since January 2018 in Kenya- (Kirinyaga, Meru, Nyeri, Machakos and Embu Counties), Tanzania- (Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions) and Uganda (Kapchorwa and Kiruhura Districts). The program’s midterm impacts have been gathered and the project now intends to determine economic viability models for East African coffee farmers.
Impact Investments is one of our five innovation areas at Solidaridad that supports scale up of best practices in various value chains. We provide impact investors with a pipeline of investible propositions to create meaningful impact across the agricultural sector. Through these investments, we support farmers, buyers, processors and service providers to become entrepreneurs of self-sustaining businesses. This study will therefore generate a pipeline of the best business opportunities across different coffee farmer categories across East Africa that can be supported by different stakeholders and investors to unlock investments for the sector in the region.
Objectives of the assignment:
a) Identify 3 to 5 potential business models that provide potential viable business opportunities for farmers in various categories (Impact information of different farmer categories supported in the project will be provided).**
b) Develop an implementation strategy for the proposed business models that Solidaridad and other industry stakeholders can use to test feasibility and actual implementation.**
c) Map and recommend potential investors that would be interested in Investing in the identified business models along the coffee value chain based on desk research and existing networks.**
Study Methodology:
The methodology for this study will include both direct and indirect data collection (the bulk of the required data is available), analysis and cross referencing and formulating recommendations thematically. The Consultant will finalize the methodology to undertake this study in line with the scope of the assessment presented and refined with the management during the inception meeting. The methodology used during this assessment will overall, include, but not be limited to the following:
a. Review existing relevant secondary information and reports related to the East Africa coffee origin.
b. Review of previous Solidaridad coffee project level documents and reports.
c. Discuss with key Solidaridad staff, partners and key informants at office and field implementation levels.
d. Use of data from local institutions or organizations.
e. Data analysis and verification of analyzed data.
Inputs:
a. Solidaridad shall provide the consultant with background information on the project
b. Solidaridad shall introduce the consultant to key partners for the purpose of further desktop research and preparatory planning. It will be the responsibility of the consultant to make contact with external stakeholders.
c. The consultant will have sessions with the coffee team to collect their views on the above mentioned issues.
Outputs:
1. An expression of interest (EOI) for the business cases development assignment outlining;
a. A detailed methodology for the assignment implementation
b. A detailed timeline and budget for the assignment.
c. A sample / samples of previous related work.
d. Updated CVs for lead consultant and team members
2. Presentation of the assignment methodology to Solidaridad team in an inception meeting and incorporate suggestions in the final inception report.
3. Draft report of the study for feedback and comments from Solidaridad and partners involved.
4. Presentation on the main findings of the study for validation with project teams, and other stakeholders as agreed with project team.
Coordination and cooperation:
The Consultant undertaking the assignment will work closely with Solidaridad’s coffee team.
Expert/Consultant’s Profile:
1. Relevant degree(s) in social sciences or development studies
- Proven experience in handling similar assignments including interpretation of business concepts into investment cases and investor investees linkages in the agriculture sector.
3. Statistical analysis skills and strong proficiency with data analysis packages.
- Understanding of the Kenyan coffee sector and relevant experience in the agriculture sector
5. Excellent communication and written skills in English
Consultancy firms/companies with verifiable similar experience in the coffee sector are encouraged to express their interests.
