Summary of position:
Summary of Position:
The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service works with governments, associations and businesses to identify opportunities as well as obstacles for trade. Trade Commissioners guide Canadian companies on their international business journey by: assessing their potential for specific markets; developing market-entry strategies; connecting them with important opportunities; and helping resolve complex business problems. Trade Commissioners help Canadian companies by providing: on-the-ground intelligence; qualified contacts and privileged access to foreign governments/business leaders/decision makers; and access to partnership opportunities and export deals, including investment and research and development.

Under the general direction of the Senior Trade Commissioner this position supports the delivery of Canada’s international business development program.

Our ideal candidate will be dynamic, highly organised, collaborative, and results-oriented, with experience in international business development, client service, and program management.

Duties:
• assess the aerospace, defence and security sectors to identify commercial opportunities for Canadian businesses;
• monitor industry and government policies affecting the aerospace, defence and security sectors;
• advise on and assist with trade policy/market assess issues;
• research and reply to enquiries from Canadian firms, governments, and associations;
• work in partnership with relevant stakeholders to create business to business opportunities (activities, events) within a developed strategic business plan;
• establish effective rapport with Canadian and Australian companies and organisations
• provide briefing reports to senior management and assist with high level visits
• other duties and sectors as required.

 

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language and experience. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:
• Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.

Language:
• Fluency in written and spoken English.

Experience:
• *At least five (5) years of professional experience performing such tasks as gathering business intelligence, writing briefings/short reports, and providing expert advice to clients and senior management.
• *At least five (5) years of professional experience in the defence, security or aerospace sectors in Australia
• Experience in building and managing a professional network.
• Experience in project management including strategic planning, implementation, budget managing and tracking/reporting results.

*For the purpose of this competition, “Professional experience” would be at an officer level not an administrative level.

will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.

Operational Requirements:
• Working hours are Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week – 8:30 to 16:30
• Must be willing and able for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e. evenings and weekends), sometimes on short notice;
• Must be willing and able to travel

The successful candidate must:
• Able to obtain and retain a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal background check. This clearance is a requirement prior to appointment from the Government of Canada. This involves, among other things, Australian Federal Police checks, credit checks, and validation of qualifications. The required level of security clearance must be maintained throughout the employment period.
• Only Australian citizens, permanent residents or those holding a valid visa permitting them to work unrestricted in Australia will be eligible to apply. The High Commission of Canada in Australia is unable to provide employment sponsorship.
