Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO) is a global network focused on securing livelihoods for the working poor, especially women, in the informal economy. We believe all workers should have equal economic opportunities and rights. WIEGO creates change by building capacity among informal worker organizations, expanding the knowledge base about the informal economy, and influencing global, national and local policies.
About UPP
The Urban Policies Programme (UPP) aims to influence urban policy debates and government practices. Our vision is to transform urban systems so that informal workers have higher and more stable incomes, secure places to live and work, and the capacity to negotiate sustainable gains in urban policies, planning and implementation. The programme combines research, capacity building and strategic advocacy in partnership with membership-based organizations to generate more inclusive and equitable urban systems.
About the role
WIEGO is seeking a Programme Director to provide organization-wide leadership on urban policy and planning issues and to lead our Urban Policies Team. You will work in partnership with our members, partners and stakeholders to transform urban systems to be more appropriate, accessible and accountable to workers in the urban informal economy. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to motivate and guide a highly experienced team engaged in work primarily based in the global South and focusing on three occupational sectors, and on women in particular: home-based workers, street vendors and waste pickers. This position reports directly to WIEGO’s International Coordinator.
About You
The successful candidate will bring knowledge and direct experience in the informal economy field, with a focus on urban policies, local government or urban planning. The candidate should be able to demonstrate experience in strategizing and influencing policy processes at a senior level and success in team management and leadership roles. S/he should be an activist researcher with demonstrated leadership ability and experience in project and budget management. Experience in a range of geographic locations (especially in the global South) and issue areas is a plus.
