About Access Now
Access Now is a growing international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world, including issues of privacy, security, connectivity, freedom of expression, and transparency. Our policy, advocacy, Helpline, grants, and operations teams have staff presences in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East/North Africa (MENA), North America, and Asia/Pacific, to provide global support to our mission.
About the role
As a US Policy Analyst you will help lead our US-focused policy work around three primary issues: data protection, broadband connectivity, and content governance. The analyst will engage in significant research and writing in any and all of these topics, with a focus toward advancing policies that center the needs and experiences of those underrepresented in tech policy and those whose rights are most at-risk. Beyond that, the position will entail extensive coalition and partner outreach and representation, and outreach to the Hill.
The US Policy Analyst is housed within the Policy Team arm, reports through the US Policy Manager, and liaises closely with other members of the Organization’s global Policy, Advocacy and Legal Teams.
About you

You are passionate about our mission, developing tech policy solutions that improve people’s lives, and about seeing those ideas through to real-world implementation. You are a careful, precise, and analytical thinker, with the ability to get the details right while also keeping the big picture in mind. You are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse global team, and about bringing together differing points of view to achieve the best possible result for the communities we serve, and you are committed to the work of elevating and empowering the voices of those who are often silenced.

- Develop forward-thinking policy positions on topics related to data protection, broadband connectivity, and content governance, as well as rapid-response guidance on how those policies apply in specific contexts
- Track and engage with legislation and administrative proceedings, and contribute strategies for seeing Access Now’s core policies adopted and enforced
- Develop materials for a range of audiences, including agency comments, articles, op-eds, campaign content, press releases, blog posts, social media, white papers, and multimedia content
- Establish and maintain relationships with outside parties like coalition partners, lawmakers, regulators, and media
- Help organize and support Access Now events, including RightsCon
What skills you should have
- Demonstrated ability to develop thorough research, and effectively communicate to your target audience. Some examples include a strong background in public policy, journalism, campaigning, and legal advocacy, among others.
- Deep knowledge of emerging policy issues in at least one of the following areas: data protection, broadband connectivity, and content governance
- A developed understanding of U.S. policymaking, the political landscape, and the levers for developing policy, including how the legislative process and administrative agency proceedings work and how to influence them
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, respond quickly to breaking news items, and effectively balance competing priorities
- Cultural awareness and the ability to communicate with a wide range of people around the world
- Excellent public speaking skills
It’s helpful for you to have
- Experience managing projects or taking an active lead in coalitions
- Experience engaging directly with decision-makers in both the public and private sector
