The British Embassy Abu Dhabi has a vacancy for a Caretaker for a fixed term contract of one (1) year. This role is split across two sites in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi.
In Al Ain, you will be responsible for the general up keep of the Embassy Bungalow. This may require weekend work and staying overnight in Al Ain. There is a caretaker bungalow for the jobholder to use whilst at the location in Al Ain.
In Abu Dhabi, you will be part of the Technical Works Group (TWG), providing support to local maintenance requests and reporting to the Maintenance Officer based in Abu Dhabi.
Duties and responsibilities:
– In Al Ain
- Maintain the interior and exterior of the Embassy Bungalow, keeping all areas clean and tidy and ready for guests.
- Perform and oversee routine maintenance tasks, including contractor oversight, to up keep the Bungalow.
- Ensure that the Bungalow is safe and secure and that all gates and fences are intact.
- Maintain garden and outdoor areas, keeping it free from stray animals.
- Manage the bookings and keeping the visitors log up to date.
- Forwarding visitor records on a monthly basis to Finance in Abu Dhabi.
- Before arrival of guests, ensure that the refrigerator and air conditioners are working and switched on.
- Ensure all linen is laundered in a timely manner.
- Ensure that emergency information is displayed at the entrance table by the front door.
- Assist guests with local information as required.
- Ensure the bungalow is thoroughly cleaned pre-arrival and post-departure of all guests.
- Manage and maintain maintenance logs on site as directed by the Maintenance Officer
- Report all necessary maintenance requirements to the Maintenance Manager.
- Liaise with local municipal authorities as and when required.
- Arrange a stand in caretaker when going on leave, subject to authorisation.
- Do monthly check on all fixtures and fittings and write a monthly report for submission to the Maintenance Officer.
– In Abu Dhabi and other general works
- Perform minor repair/ maintenance work at the Bungalow and in the Abu Dhabi compound in consultation with the Maintenance Officer.
- Participate in the Embassy emergency planning process and assist as required in responding to any crisis.
The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required.
Key competencies required:

- Previous experience in any of the following: Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning System, Painting, and Civil Works.
- Ability to identify ad hoc maintenance requirements essential for facility management services.
- Ability to manage day-to-day maintenance and support requests and other additional tasks.
- Good English language skills, both written and spoken. Able to express ideas and messages clearly.
- Sound interpersonal skills. Demonstrates courtesy and consideration in dealing with staff and other stakeholders.
- Good organisational skills and flexibility to manage and prioritise tasks.
- Team player who is also capable of working on their own initiative.
- Good IT and computer skills. Ability to use MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams).
- Holds a recognised trade qualification (technical trade certificate or diploma) in any of the following: Electrical, Refrigeration, Mechanical, Civil Technology.
- Knowledge of health and safety principles.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including: 25 days of leave per annum; on-site swimming pool, gym, and sports facilities (subject to temporary COVID-19 restrictions).
Salary is at AED 4,527 per month.
There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. Whilst there is a caretaker bungalow for the jobholder to use when on location in Al Ain, no other accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Standard working hours are from 07:30 to 15:06, including a lunch break of 36 minutes, from Sunday to Thursday.
The successful candidate should also be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours.
The successful candidate will be required to transfer their visa under the Embassy’s sponsorship.
