In Australia we have signed an Agreement in Principle (AIP) for our Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This is a momentous occasion as these FTAs are our first ‘new’ Trade agreements that the UK will sign since leaving the European Union. These ambitious FTAs present a unique opportunity in our bi-lateral relationships with both Australia and New Zealand to build broader and deeper economic ties. Working across the ANZ network with businesses and stakeholders, the job holder will be responsible for ensuring that we are optimising the opportunities that the FTAs present.

This key role will see you working directly to the FTA Programme Manager as part of a small, dynamic team leading the high profile FTA programme work across ANZ.

You will assist UK companies with Australian trade and export ambitions with support on information about the market, business set up assistance, sector information and expansion support to high growth business who will benefit from the FTA.

You will also provide support to the Programme Manager, providing them with general administration, marketing and event support and form part of a wider UK network at the British Consulates and the British High Commission in Canberra.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

This exciting and engaging role will work with UK companies exporting to Australia who respond to opportunities arising from the FTA.

You will work with each company to assess their suitability for UK government support then assist them on the ground in Australia.  This will be achieved through account management, project management, relationship management, research and administration of the Department’s data needs.

Essential to the role will be the ability to communicate information and materials to each company and promote the benefits of the FTA in Australia. The role requires collaboration through a virtual team structure in Australia’s wide network (colleagues are located in Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane), working with UK-based sector team colleagues, UK regional team colleagues.  

The jobholder will work directly to the Programme Manager to provide administrative support, event management and assistance with marketing and comms.  You will be supporting the FTA delivery plan working across the network, the marketing and communications team, and the wider regional APAC team where appropriate and required.

The role will also require event planning, management and attendance, and will require the ability to communicate effectively. An ability to network, establish strong relationships within the ANZ business community, and other industry multipliers to actively support and leverage outcomes will be viewed favourably.

Essential on arrival:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field
  • A minimum of one years’ work experience in business, ideally in an international & B2B context, business development or market research.
  • Strong inter-personal, networking, presentation and communication skills
  • Strong research and analytical skills with capacity to collate and synthesis information from a wide variety of sources and tailor information to diverse audiences
  • Good knowledge of the Australian business environment
  • Ability to deliver to ambitious targets and outcomes
  • Proactive and enthusiastic with a self-starter mind-set
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team
  • High level organisational skills and ability to work at pace under pressure to achieve results

Language requirements:  

Language: English

Level of language required: Fluent  

  • Some knowledge of the UK’s business environment, and some regional centres of the UK.
  • Some knowledge of the processes involved in overseas company expansions (foreign direct investment and international trade (exports)).
  • Competency and experience with Microsoft Teams
  • Experience with research intelligence tools, such as IBISWorld and customer relations management systems

This position is being advertised as a 18 months fixed term position in Australia, and will be extended subject to performance and availability of funding.
