In Australia we have signed an Agreement in Principle (AIP) for our Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This is a momentous occasion as these FTAs are our first ‘new’ Trade agreements that the UK will sign since leaving the European Union. These ambitious FTAs present a unique opportunity in our bi-lateral relationships with both Australia and New Zealand to build broader and deeper economic ties. Working across the ANZ network with businesses and stakeholders, the job holder will be responsible for ensuring that we are optimising the opportunities that the FTAs present.

We are looking for a talented, self-starter to lead the high profile FTA programme work across ANZ. This role reports into the Consul General Sydney/ Deputy Trade Commissioner but will work closely across DIT teams in Australia and the wider Asia Pacific region, our Canberra based trade policy team and communications team along with UK Headquarter colleagues.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Strategic Leadership

  • Leading the strategic roll out of the of the FTA campaigns across Australia and New Zealand.Ensure the associated activities delivered by teams achieve desired outcomes and outputs and realise the required benefits.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of delivery of the campaign across Australia and New Zealand.
  • The job holder will need to have exceptionally strong leadership and management skills; leading projects and inspiring colleagues to deliver to a high standard. Confidence in reporting at senior ministerial level.
  • Empowering the wider DIT Team to think creatively and develop innovative approaches that support them to deliver a quality campaign
  • Confident in communicating (both written and spoken) with ministers and other seniors

Programme Management

  • Providing effective leadership and management controls to deliver successful FTA campaigns.
  • Planning
  • In collaboration with stakeholders leads on design and delivery of effective transition between campaign phases – Agreement in Principle/ Signing/ Ratification/ Activation.
  • Setting up appropriate PMO mechanisms for delivery, reporting and evaluation of the FTAs in market.
  • Proactively monitoring progress, identifying risks and resolving issues.
  • Defining governance arrangements 

Relationship Management

  • Ability to collaborate with a complex group of internal and external stakeholders and achieve shared objectives.
  • Building and maintaining strong strategic relationships at senior levels across government and within the business community.
  • Managing and influencing multiple stakeholder groups.

General

  • Make a demonstrable contribution to the corporate agenda of the British Consulate and the whole UK Government Australian network.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

Line Management to be determined. Management of personal expenditure and sector resources.

Essential on arrival:

  • Evidence of success in a leadership role, providing strategic prioritisation and clear evidence of empowering others to achieve organisational goals.
  • The ability to work flexibly and at pace and to make sound decisions in a complex, fast-moving and multi-stakeholder environment (involving government departments, Ministers, senior officials, external stakeholders)
  • Interpersonal effectiveness and strategic approach to managing delivery of complex programmes.
  • Demonstrable track record of influencing and working across departmental boundaries to deliver strategic priorities.
  • Strong planning skills, able to identify and address risks early on and use innovative solutions to enable mitigation.
  • Able to work on your own initiative and under pressure across different time zones.
  • The role will require regular (weekly) travel between Canberra and Sydney.  Travel elsewhere in the network may be required.

Language requirements:  

Language: English

Level of language required: Fluent  

  • Project planning, governance of projects, and excellent organisational skills.
  • Experience in the delivery of high profile programmes
  • Knowledge of project and programme methods
  • Experience of working in an international environment
