The British Embassy in Bangkok is part of a world-wide network of 230 Posts, representing British political, economic, Visa and Consular interests overseas.

This is a unique opportunity to join a diverse Corporate Services Team where no day is the same. The jobholder will work closely with the Corporate Services Manager (CSM), managers in the Embassy and the HR Hub based in Manila to ensure effective delivery of this role. This role will also deputise for the Corporate Services Manager, representing them at meetings and providing support to other corporate services work areas.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
Operational Human Resource Management
- Manage country based staff HR policy, operations, employment terms and conditions, working closely with the regional HR Hub in Manila.
- Ensure country based staff terms and conditions of service are compliant with local Thai employment law.
- Ensure global country based staff policy is followed (including global minimum standards).
- Support leadership teams on workforce planning and budgeting.
- Co-own the country based staff charter in conjunction with country based staff associations.
- Collaborate with the HLA (Honorary Legal Advisor), concerning local Thai Labour Law and liaise with the HR hub Manila concerning recommendations. Ensure changes are reflected in the Terms and Conditions of Service.
- Provide confidential guidance and support to employees concerning disciplinary procedures
- Provide statistical information and reports to internal stakeholders and other FCDO Embassies and Consulates across the region when required.
- Provide support to the CSM on HR initiatives such as salary reviews/staff surveys.
- Support activity on wellbeing and mental health.
- Support the DHM in developing and disseminating timely, co-ordinated and engaging communications on corporate issues
- Provide guidance and mentoring on HR matters to line managers and employees in conjunction with the HR Hub Manila.
- Manage the provision of protocol advice in collaboration with the Protocol Officer.
Recruitment and On-boarding
- Manage local recruitment processes, working closely with the regional Recruitment Hub.
- Manage on-boarding and exit processes and documents, ensuring they are up to date and relevant.
- Tailor induction to local needs.
- Manage local recruitment schemes including interim personnel pool and internships.
HR Finance
- Coordinate with the HR hub Manila concerning employee entitlements to benefits and salaries.
- Provide support to Sections during redundancy/resignations, giving advice concerning severance and redundancy payments.
- Provide employees with confidential payroll advice, e.g. deputising pay, sickness absence, unpaid leave.
Performance Management
- Lead the annual appraisal process and provide ongoing support to all country based staff.
- Oversee the appraisal moderation process.
- Drive Embassy-wide development activities to further enhance the performance management processes within the Embassy, including developing and delivering training sessions to support employees.
- Collate data for the payment of Performance Related Pay (PRP) and provide guidance and support to the country based staff organisation and the CSM in calculating the payments.
- Design and implement local reward and recognition policies.
- Working closely with the HR Hub, manage local disciplinary and misconduct procedures, advise and guide leadership teams on bullying, harassment and discrimination issues.
Team Support
- Provide cover for the Corporate Services Manager during periods of absence
- Support other members of the corporate services team as required.
- Participate in post crisis activity as a member of the Crisis Welfare Team
- Act as contact for the local staff association.

- Ability to get things done with minimal supervision
- Strong people skills and an ability to influence at all levels
- Dynamic, well organised self-starter with excellent communication skills
- Excellent team working skills, with strong ability to build co-operative working relationships across a large network, including external contacts
- Fluent English language skills, written and spoken
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness, good judgement, can work with integrity and discretion
- Level of language required: Fluent spoken and written English
- Line management experience
- Trainer/Assessor/Teaching Qualifications
- Experience of working in an international, multi-cultural organisation, and/or experience of living and working abroad in a foreign country.
- Knowledge of Bangkok and Thailand
- Knowledge of FCO policies and procedures
- CIPD qualified
- Basic Thai language skills

The majority of our formal L&D opportunities are drawn from FCO resources. All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training (‘lunch & learn’) or coaching/mentoring. All staff are eligible for 5 L&D days a year. Attend relevant Learning and Development activities to acquire the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the Corporate Services team and wider Embassy.
Working patterns:
Full time role (36 hours/week, Monday to Friday). Flexible working available (Embassy core hours are 1000-1600 Mon-Thurs and 1000-1300 Friday).
In crisis/emergency situations work as required to support the Embassy response (sometimes on a shift pattern working unsociable hours).
This job is suitable for flexible working patterns, subject to operational requirements.
