Main purpose of job:
You will be responsible for the day to day operations of the Department for International Trade (DIT) in Thailand. You will support existing and new exporters to export their goods and services to Thailand and find high quality and high value inward investment from Thailand to the UK. Your primary measure of success will be the value of contracts you and your team assist British companies to secure and the value of investment projects that you attract into the UK. This is a key leadership role that will see you role model the Embassy values of courage, ambition and generosity. You will deliver our diversity ambitions and play a leading part in making the Embassy a fun and fulfilling place to work. Within the DIT team, you will be responsible for corporate functions including business planning, finance and recruitment. You will support our trade policy work and support our ambition to achieve a bilateral FTA in the future.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

The UK and Thailand have a strong trading relationship that dates back more than 400 years, and it is a trading relationship that continues to go from strength to strength. With outstanding contacts at every level of the Thai government and business, we have unparalleled access to the most influential people in Thai society. We use these contacts for the benefit of British businesses who are exporting a whole range of goods and services across the oceans.
You will manage the day to day operations of the Department for International Trade (DIT) in Thailand. You will support the increase of UK exports to Thailand and Thai inward investment to the UK. Your primary measure of success will be the value of contracts you and your team assist British companies to secure and the value of investment projects that you attract into the UK. You will also be responsible for corporate functions including business planning, finance and recruitment.
We engender a one team approach across the Embassy, so at times we will ask you to undertake representational requirements, such as attending receptions on behalf of Her Majesty’s Government, or support other departments in their work.
The jobholder is expected to provide day to day management of the DIT Thailand team with the support of the Director, as you work pro-actively with the DIT network in Asia-Pacific, our colleagues in prosperity, political, consular, communications, defence and visa team (in Vietnam), the British Council, and Whitehall departments in order to:
- Drive the team to assist companies to secure contracts (so-called export wins) in Thailand through close working with British companies, helping them export to Thailand;
- Encourage new and existing UK exporters to secure export wins in the Thai market through close co-operation with the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand, and members of the Thai-UK Business Leadership Council;
- Act as the day to day lead for the Department of International Trade in Thailand, managing day to day and corporate service functions;
- Support new Thai inward investment into the UK through high level engagement with the major Thai corporations and business families, in particular through the Thai-UK Business Leadership Council;
- Rapidly develop a close relationship with your colleagues, to ensure a joined up approach to our work across the Embassy;
- Support our trade policy work and our future ambition to secure an FTA with Thailand;
- Promote the UK as an innovative and creative partner, with a world class commercial offer that directly maps onto critical Thai requirements as Thailand upgrades its economy to a more knowledge-based model;
- Role model the Embassy values of courage, ambition and generosity and ensure an inclusive approach to your work and your team; and
- Play an active role in supporting staff across the Embassy, including taking part in/leading our work in committees that enhance the overall wellbeing of our staff.
Resources managed (staff and expenditure): 4 x C4 (L), 1 x B3 (L) 3xA2(L) although line management arrangements will shortly be under review.

The successful candidate should be able to start as soon as possible, subject to successful clearance of pre-employment/security checks.

A wide range of learning through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s International Academy will be available in all aspects of trade, investment, foreign policy and political economy.
We encourage all staff to develop their capabilities, through both formal training courses and informal opportunities such as job-shadowing, coaching and on-the-job training. All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training sessions or coaching/mentoring. We have an active L&D committee who organise a varied programme of learning for all staff.
All staff are eligible for five learning and development days a year.
Working patterns:
All flexible working arrangements are welcome and encouraged. As this is a leadership role, you will principally be based in the British Embassy, but there is considerable scope for home working and other flexible working arrangements to support family or other commitments.
In crisis/emergency situations you may need to work as required to support the Embassy response, sometimes on a shift pattern working which may result in unsociable hours and/or weekend working.
Other conditions:
Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment and security checks. Staff who are locally recruited by the British Embassy are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law.
No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in the country of the vacancy with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit. Any costs related to obtaining or renewing permits and visas are the responsibility of the successful applicant (though for this role, the embassy will assist the successful candidate where possible, to secure a visa if they are not a Thai National).
