Main purpose of job:

You will join DIT Thailand team which promotes exports to Thailand of British goods and services, investment from Thailand to the UK, and mutual improved market access to help grow our bilateral trade.

Senior Trade Officer will maintain and develop a pipeline of commercial opportunities in key sectors such as defense and security, under the direction of the Country Deputy Director. You will carry out market research, deliver promotional activities and interact with British and Thai companies to help them understand the opportunities available for UK companies in Thailand, promote UK offers to Thai companies, unlock market access barriers and provide support to the Joint Economic and Trade Commitee (JETCO).

DIT Thailand team works closely with our Headquarters teams in London, regional and local colleagues, representatives of the three Devolved Administrations of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, with a key objective of driving trade and foreign investment into the UK. This is an exciting time to work for the Department for International Trade (DIT), which sits at the heart of the United Kingdom’s post-EU future and is responsible for designing and implementing our future trading arrangements with other countries. This includes developing, co-ordinating and delivering a new trade and investment policy for the UK and promoting UK exports and investment across the world.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Facilitate UK export growth under the direction of the Country Deputy Director, by delivering business development activities to support innovative UK companies, including virtual and in-person trade missions and campaigns at industry conferences.
  • Forge strong relationships with Thai and UK business leaders, trade associations and other key partners within the responsible sectors. DIT Thailand is currently under-going a focus sector review, but we expect defence and security to remain among key sectors for the team.
  • Maintain current knowledge of market trends, incentives, and commercial opportunities for UK companies in Thailand and develop a good understanding of UK strengths to effectively promote the UK offers to a Thai audience.
  • Support UK prosperity and economic growth, as well as UK trade policy objectives, in collaboration with other UK government agencies.
  • Support virtual and in-person visits by senior UK government officials by securing high-level meetings, organising activities, and preparing briefing materials.
  • Manage DIT Thailand’s budget and finance, including leading on procurement processes, monitor team’s spending and prepare monthly finance report to senior management team and DIT Finance Hub.

The role will report to the Depurty Country Director- DIT Thailand and will be supported by a shared Trade Assistant.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

You will oversee DIT Thailand’s budget and manage a small fund (approx. £5,000-7,000) to deliver trade promotion activities. Procurement and spending will be under UK government’s policy and process. Trainings will be provided.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a customer facing and/or trade related job
  • A proven track record of successful relationship management with high-level stakeholders and international clients
  • Fluency in English and Thai (spoken and written)
  • Events and project management skills and experience delivering results against deadlines/targets
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills including in giving presentations to external audiences
  • Strong administration and organisation skills
  • Evidence of self-motivation, professionalism and the ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Evidence of adaptability and ability to prioritise against competing, challenging tasking
  • A flexible and creative problem-solver, able to come up with innovative solutions to complex challenges
  • Flexible and reactive to new issues and priorities
  • IT proficiency – Using MS Office, Outlook and ability to learn FCDO systems.
  • Ability to travel within Thailand and Asia

Language requirements:

Language:  English    

Level of language required: Fully fluent in all aspects of English and Thai

  • Keen interest in business and trade.
  • Experience of living in or understanding of the United Kingdom, British people and culture.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed): 

The jobholder will have access to the UK government’s extensive Trade Faculty training offer, including online training, lectures, discussions and in-depth specialist courses. A wide range of training to develop personal competences is also available through the FCDO and DIT regional training centres. We encourage all staff to develop their capabilities, through both formal training courses and informal opportunities such as job-shadowing, coaching and on-the-job training. All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training sessions or coaching/mentoring. We have an active L&D committee who organise a varied programme of learning for all staff.

All staff are eligible for 5 Learning and Development days a year.

Working patterns: 

This is a full time role – 36 hours/week, Monday to Friday. We are currently piloting hybrid working (some time working in the office, some time working from home) as we transition back to normal working practices, while ensuring the health and safety of our staff. You will be expected to spend some time out of the office, engaging with partners and stakeholders; some time in the office; and will be able to have the flexibility to work from home. If the context of the pandemic changes, the proportion of time spent at home / in office / in external engagements may change.

The Embassy has a smarter working policy and is committed to offering flexible working patterns balanced with the operational requirements of the role. In crisis/emergency situations you may need to work as required to support the Embassy response, sometimes on a shift pattern working which may result in unsociable hours and/or weekend working.
