Main purpose of job:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK government agency that helps foster UK Exports and Inward Investment. DIT officers at overseas posts liaise with the UK headquarters and other departments across the British Government to generate commercial, policy and institutional collaborations in other markets.

This is a brilliant opportunity to work in a high profile, regional trade campaign in the Life Sciences sector, covering Brazil. In this role you will be developing commercial and market access work in key segments in healthcare and life sciences, including genomics and advanced therapies, digital health, pharmaceutical development, and health technology assessment, among others.

As Business Development Manager, you will manage an existing pipeline of commercial opportunities and research and validate new opportunities as and when they arise. Your success in this position will primarily be measured on the value of exports you assist British companies to achieve in Brazil. Your performance will also be measured considering the successful implementation of market access and government relation plans that tackle barriers to trade in Brazil.

The candidate will work with both commercial and policy activities to support the growth of UK market share in Brazil, playing a leading role in organising high level visits, events, market research and marketing planning.

The successful candidate will have strong communication skills and a high level of emotional intelligence that will allow you to pitch your approaches appropriately. This position will see you exposed to senior government and business contacts and therefore strong communication skills and a high level of resilience and persistence are essential.

You will deliver a number of high profile events, both in Brazil and the UK that will be designed to showcase the best of British healthcare to our customers. This will require attention to detail and strong relationships with both contractors and our team based throughout Brazil, Latin America and in the UK.

The position will suit an energetic, motivated self-starter with a passion for the health sector. It will require a positive and proactive attitude that thinks in terms of opportunities, not problems, and will be able to motivate the delivery of challenging targets.

You will have the opportunity to participate at ministerial visits and meetings, trade shows, seminars, and internal and external events in order to develop your professional skills and experience to enhance your future career prospects.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Lead delivery of country plan with support of regional lead in Brazil;
  • Lead the preparation of market research reports, internal briefings, visiting programmes;
  • Lead delivery of government relations and market access work in partnership with other colleagues across the network
  • Organising commercial and market access events;
  • Lead communication and engagement with key internal partners, including Science, Communications, and Development teams;
  • Develop commercial strategy and scope of business opportunities with Brazilian companies, through research, commercial meetings and cold calls;
  • Accompanying meetings with Brazilian and UK companies, both virtually and in person.

This position is based at British Consulate General São Paulo.

  • The successful candidate will be a university graduate, preferably in a business-related, international relations, government relations, economics and/or medical/healthcare/biotechnology areas and/or have working experience of at least 3 years in the area of international trade.
  • The successful candidate must also be flexible, dynamic and pro-active.
  • They will have an excellent command of written and spoken English and Portuguese, and excellent communication and presentation skills with both languages.
  • They will have knowledge in Microsoft Office packages.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, team player, quick learner.
  • Proactive self-starter, willing to “go the extra mile”, collaborative, organized, responsible, communicative, creative and opened to learn and receive feedback.
  • Experience working with events, marketing and advocacy.
  • At least 3 years of work experience in public/private health sector in Brazil.
  • A sound understanding of how the health market operates in Brazil and its main players.
  • Ability to innovate, solve problems, prioritise, organise and manage multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is an advantage.

Learning and development opportunities:

Essential HMG training will be given at the beginning of the term, with on-the-job training available throughout.

The Department for International Trade encourages staff development through internal programmes, shadowing with colleagues and an effective development plan. 

Working patterns:

36 hours a week, no more than 7:15 hours a day, starting and finishing times flexible between 08:00 and 19:00.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
