The British Embassy in The Hague is looking for a Business Development Officer Export Growth to join its Department for International Trade (DIT) team on a one-year fixed-term contract to support the work of the Enhanced International Support Service (EISS) Europe enquiry hub.
DIT promotes British trade and investment around the world, helping to build an appetite for British goods and services globally and encouraging foreign investment into the UK. DIT also brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade & investment and to help businesses to succeed. DIT Netherlands works with both Dutch companies looking to invest in the UK and British companies undertaking business in the Netherlands across the main business sectors of the economy. In this role you will work closely with the EISS and with DIT’s export support network in the UK to identify and assist high potential British exporters, including innovative SMEs and Mid-Sized Businesses (MSBs) access supply chains in The Netherlands. You support the team by addressing the enquiries that are not covered by the sector specialists. A core element of the role will be to deliver practical support to those companies, including information on market landscape, potential clients and distributors.
Where time allows the jobholder will carry responsibility for the Retail and Consumer sector. You are responsible for the enquiries from UK exporters in this sector, seeking export opportunities in The Netherlands. The jobholder will seek to expand networks of commercial partners, looking to uncover the next market opportunities for UK business.
Finally, the jobholder will underpin the wider activities of the DIT Netherlands team through providing support to the team’s marketing activities and business development events.
Main responsibilities will include:
- Support the DIT Europe EISS hub in delivering commercial services, guidance, information and support to high potential British exporters – including innovative small companies, entrepreneurs and MSBs;
- Focus on unlocking the considerable market opportunity for exporters in the Retail and Consumer sector;
- Contribute to the realisation of the wider objectives of the DIT Netherlands team by supporting the team’s marketing activities and business development events;
- Maintain excellent databases and records to facilitate and encourage collaboration and to measure success.
- Fluency in English (both oral and written, minimum C1 level*);
- Proven IT skills, including capabilities in digital project management and MS Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel);
- Formal qualifications and/or experience in business/economics/finance or marketing in an international setting;
- Good project management, including an eye for detail, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery are thought through carefully;
- Excellent communication skills to work well with commercial clients, external contacts and a wide and diverse Europe team;
- Customer focus: a concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided;
- Resourcefulness and ability to act on own initiative, with an ability to find creative solutions.
- Good command of written and spoken Dutch;
- An understanding of the UK and Dutch business environments;
- Previous commercial experience would be useful.

The successful candidate will be offered a fixed-term employment contract for 12 months at A2(L) level. The base salary for this position is €3,189.12 gross per month, based on a working week of 36 hours. In addition, an 8% holiday bonus and a monthly working from home allowance are payable. Actual commuter travel expenses up to a limit or a monthly set travel allowance for commuter costs are payable depending on the role and how often office work is needed. The Embassy currently applies a performance based bonus pay model for local staff.

The successful candidate will undergo a professional background check; Any job offer is also provisional to a successful security clearance check.

Under the terms of the UK/NL Double Taxation Convention (Article 18 1(b)(ii), UK nationals who move to The Netherlands to take up their new role at the Embassy/Consulate and UKB spouse who start working at the Embassy with no previous record of working in the Netherlands since the arrival of the UKB partner they accompany, will be placed on a tax abated salary if deemed to be eligible for Dutch income tax exemption on their salary. Qualifying staff will have no Dutch tax levied on their salary and will therefore be paid a lower salary abated by the amount of tax they would have had to pay if that local liability existed. A tax abated salary ensures a fair and comparable take home pay. Staff on tax abated salaries cannot claim tax benefits in The Netherlands but they are fully and comprehensively covered for social security and deemed to be resident local staff for all intents and purposes.
