Main purpose of job:
The Technical Works Group (TWG) at The British High Commission is seeking to recruit a full-time Carpenter. The ideal candidate should have 2-3 years’ experience carrying out safe, sound and compliant carpentry jobs to include building works on small-scale construction projects; and, creating/refurbishing of office and residential fittings. Under the direct supervision of the TWG Foreman, the candidate shall identify suitable materials, quantity required, safely operate hand/mechanical tools and equipment; as well as, maintain safe and clean workshop and related amenities of the High Commission, at high standards. The candidate shall also liaise effectively with other tradesmen to coordinate and complete jobs in accordance with guidelines and schedule. Please note that a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is also a requirement for this position.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
· Identify, select and safely operate appropriate hand and mechanical tools and equipment used to complete carpentry duties; including, circular saw, table saw, router, ban saw pneumatic nail gun and other tools used for measuring, fastening and drilling.
· Prepare layout and build foundation.
· Build wall and install partitions.
· Assemble, erect, and dismantle scaffolding, rigging and hosting equipment.
· Install or repair doors, windows, fixtures and make workable adjustments to fittings.
· Fabricate, restore office and residential furnishings, to include painting, varnishing etc.
· Help to schedule and co-ordinate work on jobsite.
· Carry out preventative maintenance on tools and equipment by conducting inspection, lubricating and cleaning on a daily or weekly basis where needed.
· Read and interpret requirements from blueprint, structural drawing and specification and provide basic sketches to perform work activities.
· Take accurate measurements to calculate materials needed to complete jobs.
· Complete and submit daily paper work reporting time, filling out of risk assessments form etc.
· Be equip with appropriate PPE at all times.
· Comply with all company/FCDO policies and regulations.
· Work In accordance with all health and safety regulation.
· Maintain doors, windows, furniture and other items.
· Monitor and replace weather stripping.
· Remove damage or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace using hand tools.
· Carry out works related to prepare for official events (construct booths, bistro tables, stools, benches etc.)
· Take care of all official vehicle (clean and wash weekly).
· Any other duties assigned.
Essential on arrival:
· A recognised Carpentry Qualification to diploma/degree level or equivalent
· Current and valid licence
· 2 -3 years’ work experience working as a carpenter
· Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Standards
· Good IT skills (particularly Microsoft Office applications)
· Strong oral and written communication skills
· Proven ability to work in a team and follow supervisory directives
Job Holder will be required to:
· Have knowledge of mathematical principles and able to apply this on the job
· Visit job locations and communicate effectively with customers
- Utilizes other talents in related trades where necessary
Desirable:
· Knowledge of UK test and inspection techniques;
· A good understanding of other building trades;
· Knowledge of Health & Safety practices
· Construction skills highly desirable
· Knowledge/experience in other disciplines
· Basic Computer skills (Windows)
