Main purpose of job:

To provide administrative support to Climate and Environment team at the British Embassy in Brasilia.

This is a challenging position within the Climate and Environment team. 

The Climate and Environment team foster collaboration between Brazil and the UK through high-level visits, missions and programmes. The UK International Climate Finance currently has over £250 million invested in Brazil in programmes focused on forestry, low carbon agriculture, sustainable infrastructure and cities. The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference and it is under the presidency of the United Kingdom.

This position will contribute to the British Embassy work to combat Climate Change, including support to diplomatic action on the road to COP26 in Dec 2021.

The British Embassy invites applications from students in at least their 2nd year. The candidate should ideally be studying International Relations, Political Science, Law, Economics, Environmental Studies or related disciplines.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide research and administrative support to the Climate and Environment team, and more broadly to the Brazil Network.
  • Provide support for projects and events. Responsibilities include arranging meetings, booking venues, setting up events, coordinating mailing lists, sending and following up on invitations, etc.
  • Provide support on policy monitoring. Responsibilities include writing briefs on local government/stakeholders and monitoring political news.
  • Assist in the ad hoc organisation of visits to and from the UK and Brazil, including arranging logistics around accommodation, transport, and support on briefing packs and meetings.
  • Occasionally attend events or conferences (in person or online, within working hours) and write reports on them for colleagues.

  • The successful candidate must be a 2nd or 3rd year student in International Relations, Political Science, Law, Economics, Environmental Studies or other related disciplines.
  • Must be proactive with strong organisational, communication, and team-working skills.
  • Must have an excellent command of English and Portuguese (written and spoken).
  • Must have an interest in climate and environmental issues.

  • Previous experience with climate/environment research and written reports would be an advantage.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Working patterns:

This is a part time job (30 hours a week) working hours to be agreed.

The successful candidate will be based in the Brasilia Embassy.
