Main purpose of job:

This is a challenging position within the Climate Team at the British Embassy in Brasilia. The Climate Team fosters collaboration between Brazil and the UK through high-level meetings, visits, missions, and programmes.

The role of the jobholder will be to drive policy cohesion and support activities of the UK in Brazil on finance flows and market mechanisms related to climate change including REDD+, carbon markets, and payment for environmental services. The successful candidate will carry policy research, monitoring, reporting, stakeholder management, and support to engagements, visits, missions and events. This work will be carried in coordination with existing Programmes and the Green Finance and Financial Services teams.

During the initial 6 months, the job holder will additionally support the UK in Brazil preparations to the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), in particular through the preparation of events and support to stakeholder participation.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Work as policy lead on market mechanisms related to climate change including REDD+, carbon markets, and payment for environmental services, contributing with policy inputs and advice to ensure that our activities have the right impact and make a difference.
  • Drive coordination and cohesion of green finance, climate finance and market mechanisms work, collaborating with Green Finance, Financial Services, ICF and MDBs leads.
  • Stakeholder Management – Support the consolidation of a strong network of key government contacts & stakeholders at key partner organisations for the UK in Brazil, gathering knowledge of the roles they play in improving NDC implementation via collaboration, finance and market mechanisms, proposing and managing senior engagements.
  • Reporting and Knowledge Management – Monitor key policy developments related to finance and market mechanisms for implementation of Climate Strategies and drive collective reports and scripts in collaboration with the Green Finance, Financial Services and MDBs leads. Contribute to the team´s monthly reports and produce relevant flash reports.
  • Lead development and implementation of knowledge management mechanisms for the Climate team.
  • Events and Comms – Coordinate and implement events related to market mechanisms on climate change and climate finance (eg visits, seminars and events), including its logistics, attendance management and reporting, with the support of the Climate Intern. Comms – Support the Comms team in validating contents to social media and interviews.
  • Over next 6 months, support implementation of the UK’s COP26 strategy for Brazil, working to the senior climate adviser and with the wider climate, political, trade, prosperity and communications teams to deliver Brazil Network’s stakeholders successful participation.
  • Hold a corporate responsibility objective which contributes to the wider corporate agenda of the Brazil Network

  • University degree in a related field (Economy, Climate and Environment Science, International Relations, Political Science, etc);
  • Experience working for an organisation in a relevant field: national or state government, international organisations or agencies, preferably in climate change or green finance;
  • Strong understanding of international climate change policy and market mechanisms, with relevant experience including from university or previous professional work experience;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and Portuguese;
  • Proven research and reporting skills;
  • Able to deal with multiple tasks and priorities;
  • Problem-solving, attention to detail.

  • Experience of managing diverse and senior level relationships.
