Main purpose of job:

This is a great opportunity for a highly organised communications and events specialist to work in the British Embassy Havana. The jobholder will support on managing the embassy’s social media channels, ensuring they remain topical, innovative, and support the embassy’s priorities. She/he will also be an accomplished events co-ordinator, supporting the organisation of our annual British Week, and cultural and policy-related events throughout the year in the Ambassador’s Residence. The role includes supporting the Ambassador with his diary engagement and planning his activities with Embassy teams and external contacts.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  1. Digital Diplomacy. Manage the embassy’s day-to-day social media channels and website – ensuring they remain relevant, innovative, and engaging – and make full use of the latest technology. Work with other sections of the embassy (policy, consular, commercial, cultural) to help them achieve their digital communications goals, and evaluate activities and campaigns. Maintain the embassy’s communications calendar, and work with colleagues in London to support central campaigns, and produce engaging local content using your great writing skills, eye for a striking image/infographic, and ability to connect with our audience.
  2. Events Co-ordination. Support the embassy’s priorities by looking for great communications and events opportunities, and then helping us organise them. You should have, or be willing to develop, an effective network of cultural, social and press contacts that you can draw on to organise talks, receptions and debates – contributing to everything from the initial concept, through to drawing up a guest list, to logistics and publicity. You will play a central role in putting on our annual British Week – a celebration of art, theatre, film, music, fashion and the English language – and have the creativity to ensure it always evolves.
  3. Diary Planning and Management. Maintaining the Ambassador’s diary, meeting regularly to discuss priorities, and then setting up meetings and events in liaison with staff from the Ambassador’s Residence. You will ensure the embassy’s database of official contacts is up to date and continues to develop.
  4. The officer will also be a member of the Embassy Crisis Team, called upon in emergencies to help with media monitoring, managing information, supporting colleagues as needed. 

  • Bachelor’s Degree level education in journalism, social studies, communications, or other related field;
  • Experience in digital and social media used for corporate/professional purposes;
  • Strong organisation and administration skills and experience;
  • Good visual communications skills, including awareness of photography, video editing skills, and use of infographics to explain complex topics;
  • Language: Fluent Spanish and Operational English (Equivalent of C1);

  • Experience of writing for professional purposes in a variety of registers. From tweets, to press releases, to formal correspondence (as needed in diplomatic notes);
  • Experience of organising cultural events in Cuba;
  • Established network of press and cultural contacts in Cuba;
  • Experience of managing the diary of a senior official/manager;
  • Project management.

Learning and development opportunities:

The British Embassy Havana is committed to every employee’s learning and development. There is an embassy learning and development committee that organise regular development activities and help staff develop their approach to learning.

You will have access to an extensive range of online courses from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office across diplomacy, communications, and crisis communications. You may also have the opportunity for job shadowing another member of staff from the embassy, or from elsewhere in the region. You will be able to bid for training courses relevant to your job role, some of which may require travel.

Working patterns: The role is not suitable for flexible working.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
