Main purpose of job

The Corporate Services (CS) Team is responsible for the  day to day running of the administration of the British Embassy in Santo Domingo and, remotely, the British Embassy in Port au Prince. 

We are looking for an  enthusiastic and fast-learning Intern to join and support the team with day-to-day administrative tasks for the Embassy’s operations specially in IT and Estates providing high standards of customer service.  This is a great opportunity for somebody early in their career to get an insight into, and experience of, a wide range of administrative, logistical and management tasks in an international environment.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

The CS intern will work across the Corporate Services Team, helping with a wide variety of tasks and projects and getting experience of the range of support that we offer the Embassy.

Duties are likely to include:

  • General administrative assistance in Corporate Services.
  • Researching suppliers and products, assisting in procurement or maintenance
  • Liaison with suppliers and the IT Help Desk
  • IT work, under the guidance of the IT Support Officer, including updating inventories, assist in troubleshooting basic issues, updating spare and crisis grab bag IT equipment at post
  • Support for crisis-preparedness and COVID safety work
  • Supporting the Estates officer in health and safety or estates projects, including emergency drill procedures
  • Filing and keeping key information lists updated
  • Stepping in to help cover staff vacations
  • Other duties as required by the line manager or the Corporate Services Manager.

This is a varied role, with the opportunity to get experience in an unusually broad mix of areas of administrative support. An excellent suite of online training is available and the job-holder is expected to commit to personal learning and development as part of the role.

The Embassy’s working language is English.

  • Currently studying or recently graduated from a Bachelor’s degree a relevant subject, such as Engineering, IT/Computer or similar
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Internet) and MS Teams
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong customer focus
  • Ability to work at pace to tight deadlines
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills and working as part of a team
  • Attention to details
  • Experience in IT hardware, software and managing IT systems
  • Logical and systematic approach to problem solving

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Working patterns:

Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 13:00, 25 hours a week.

The job will normally be based in the British Embassy Santo Domingo. However, the jobholder might be working remotely on same days with the Embassy’s COVID policy.

The position requires pre-existing legal status to live and work in the Dominican Republic and will be subject to satisfactory reference checks and successful receipt of local and overseas security clearances
