Driver / Messenger

To perform the duties of HMA driver at the British Embassy to a high standard displaying excellent driving skills. Be punctual, courteous and aware of the reputational importance of her Majesty’s Ambassador to China. The successful candidate must follow local traffic regulations and ensure the HMA and other VIP(s)/driver’s safety at all times.

General driving duties

  • HMA’s driver should be able to check traffic situation, e.g. by using navigation app, in advance and plan alternative routes to avoid traffic when needed and should check venues in advance so they know where to go on arrival.
  • Drivers shall follow the traffic law and ensure to deliver customers safely to the right place such as all related departments; companies; airports; train stations; hotel; bank etc (including Beijing and surrounding area) at the right time: keeping to speed limits; not using the horn, obeying road mark and signals.
  • Be able to judge unfamiliar environments flexibly and take initiative to communicate with the Ambassador or Line Manager to ensure effective collection and arrival of the Ambassador.
  • Be able to work at a very short notice
  • Be available to perform ad-hoc tasks set by HMA that require the use of a vehicle.
  • Learn and accumulate driving experience, work with other team member according to work requirement.

Care of vehicles

  • Ensure the car is stocked with PPE and First Aid equipment
  • Keeping the vehicle clean and serviceable, including being aware of when servicing/ MOTs are due and liaising with Line Manager to organise a suitable time for the works to be carried out.
  • Daily check of tyre pressure, hydraulic fluid, oil, battery level and fuel
  • Identifying any defects as early as possible and to keep any potential risk to a minimal level.  Report any fault or damage immediately to Line manager and liaison with garage to repair the vehicle
  • Keeping an accurate record of all journeys and submit to Line Manager on a regular basis, ensure car service and  MOT are carried out at the appropriate times
  • Be responsible for the fines to the flag car

Other Duties

  • Keeping the car clean and presentable at all times, both inside and outside.
  • Delivery of documentation to Chinese Governmental Departments as required.
  • Transfer stuff from one place to another for the Ambassador.
  • Work with Residence staff as required.
  • Ad hoc duties as directed by the Line Manager.

  • Driver must have an A1A2 driver’s licence.
  • Be familiar with various destinations including Chinese ministries, companies, airport, hotels, banks etc.
  • Have a broad knowledge of travel routes, road conditions throughout Beijing as well as areas near Beijing such as Tianjin, Hebei etc.
  • Ability to learn and improve
  • Able to use Navigation app (such as Gaode APP etc)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Some knowledge of technical /mechanical issues.
  • Able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekend and public holidays.

  • Preferably driver has worked in a foreign diplomatic missions or has had similar experience before.
  • Basic command of English.
  • More than 5 years’ experience of being a full-time driver

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan etc. The gross starting salary for this position before all deductions is RMB 7,648/ month for Chinese Nationals, plus a flat rate OT allowance per month RMB 4000. We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata. This will increase by 0.5 days per full calendar year worked up to a maximum of 25 days. Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday; Working overtime maybe required and OT is paid according to the local law regulation.
