The British Consulate-General in Wuhan is seeking candidates to fill an exciting temporary role as Communications Officer, from January – August 2022.

Developing the UK’s engagement with China across digital and traditional media channels is a priority for the UK and maintaining a high public profile is critical to success. As Communications Officer you will have a key role in promoting the UK’s messages to audiences in central China (Hubei and Henan).  You will be tasked with event planning, producing media content and delivering impactful activities under the GREAT brand that promote the UK and support our major campaigns in China. Priority areas of engagement include climate change and energy, global health, post-COVID economic recovery, people to people links, diversity and inclusion.

Working alongside colleagues in the Consulate and reporting jointly to the Consul General and Counsellor (Communications) at the British Embassy in Beijing you will need to be confident in your ability to work independently and across teams, drawing on assistance from and contributing to the work of the wider Comms network across our 5 diplomatic posts in China. 

The role calls for well-developed creative thinking and project management skills. You will also need to be confident in engaging the media, with a view to broadening and deepening the Consulate’s engagement with audiences, e.g. through media and KOL partnerships. You will be able to demonstrate the technical skills necessary to create and deliver content and develop the Consulate’s digital and social media presence.

Given the integrated nature of the role, excellent teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills are a must. As a member of a small and dynamic Consulate team, from time to time you may need to juggle competing demands on your time or be asked to contribute to wider Consulate priorities, requiring a positive, flexible and adaptable approach to your work. 

Roles and responsibilities:

Integrated media strategy and planning

Increase awareness of and engagement with the UK’s strengths through traditional and digital activity. Lead on designing, developing and implementing impact-driven, innovative communications/marketing strategies and integrated cross-channel plans that support post and network objectives. Post priorities in the first half of 2022 where activity is planned include continuing thematic work, (e.g. climate change and healthcare) significant events (e.g. the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between UK and China and HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee) and visits to the region by the Ambassador and senior officials.

Digital Content Production and channel management

Migrate audiences from the China network’s digital channels to new Consulate channels and produce interesting and content to grow the Consulate’s social media following.  Plan and produce clear content schedules and forward-look calendars. Provide clear and consistent reporting on performance, and review and explore digital delivery with the aim of expanding the Consulate’s outreach to new audiences.

Partnership development

Proactively develop and manage innovative, integrated and impact-driven local partnerships, finding new and creative ways of delivering our work. Exploring opportunities for online collaboration with external contacts, partners and KOLs.

Brand Management

Growing and managing the Consulate, FCDO and GREAT brands in Central China. Overseeing brand management across consulate digital marketing activity and events.

Staff management and Communications Network support

Manage one A2 Support Officer to maximise their contribution to Comms objectives. This may include scanning local news sources, carrying out internal communications, researching and developing audience insight and providing data analysis and evaluation of activities carried out.

Other

Subject to confirmation the role may include providing general bilateral support by acting as point of contact for the Consulate’s communications with Hubei and Wuhan provincial Foreign Affairs Office.

  • Experience of working with and network of Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) is beneficial.
  • Previous experience working in a government-focused work environment would be beneficial.
  • Awareness or experience of the UK, particularly around public diplomacy objectives, would be beneficial

This role is a maternity cover for 8 months.

For External Non-Chinese National Candidates. Due to local Government measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, including strict entry restrictions, applicants who are non-Chinese nationals are likely to face significant obstacles when seeking residence permits, or travel into China. The British Embassy and Consulates General cannot cover the cost of transport, quarantine or accommodation for applicants who require work permits.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross salary (before all deductions) is CNY 17,208/month for Chinese Nationals and an abated monthly salary of CNY 23,822/month for British Nationals and spouses/partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria.

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.

Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
