The British Embassy in Athens is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Defence Section Officer to support in this fast paced and varied role. Assisting the Defence Attaché in all areas of supporting access for current and future UK Military operations and training in Greece, the UK Prosperity Agenda and Cooperation /Engagement. The role will adapt over time and may become more focused on specific areas of operations and Defence activity other than operations.

Roles and responsibilities:

1.       Activity – Military Operations:

  • Arrange Diplomatic Clearances and the administration for UK Military units and personnel.
  • Lead and support UK Military Forces engagement in exercise and training.
  • Plan and organise UK Defence related events expected in Country liaising with the Unit and the Country authorities at the highest levels.
  • Arrange logistic support (accommodation, travel, access to facilities) for military personnel.
  • Maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Act as first point of contact when dealing with Defence Section enquiries and correspondence.
  • Participate in, On Call Duty Roster as required.

 

2.       Business – UK Prosperity Agenda:

  • Support the Prosperity agenda within the section, highlighting areas of opportunities as required.

 

3.       Cooperation – Defence Activity other than Operations:

  • Contribute to organising UK commemorative events through the year and where necessary represent the Defence Attaché at ceremonies as required.
  • Support arrangements for any UK VIP visits.

 

4.       Finance

  • Deputise for the Finance officer when required.

5.       Administration

  • Support translation/ interpreting of host nation Language for the Defence Section as required.
  • Contribute to Administrative and Financial reports.
  • Contribute to the office administration including correspondence, filing, organising meetings, diary-management.
  • Perform other duties as may be required.

 

    

  • Excellent communication skills with fluency in English ((written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework* or equivalent);
  • Independent in oral and written Greek language skills (minimum B2/B1 for English and Greek according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*);
  • Understanding of the role and outputs of the Greek Security and Defence sectors;
  • External facing role, requiring well developed customer engagement and communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently, contribute positively as part of a small team;
  • Good organisational skills, prioritising effectively and delivering under pressure to tight deadlines;
  • Positive attitude to learning and development opportunities;
  • Proactive, flexible, can-do attitude;
  • Excellent MS Office skills.

  • Working in international relations;
  • Previous experience of working with military or Host Nation MOD;
  • Knowledge of finance and budgets.

The British Embassy offers a competitive remuneration package, 24 days annual leave entitlement (given pro-rata to staff on fixed-term contracts and/or staff working part-time), a training package and flexible working opportunities. Monthly salary for this position is EUR 1690.60 (Gross) currently payable 14 times a year (as per Greek labour law). An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate.

The successful candidate must hold one of the following passports: UK, US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. 

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy is subject to terms and conditions service according to Greek employment law. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Greece and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
