The British Embassy in Athens is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Deputy Defence Attaché to support the Defence Attaché (DA) in all areas of defence policy and Anglo – Host Nation military relations, deputising when appropriate.
Defence Section Office Manager, the resource management of all aspects of the Defence Section output supporting Operations, the UK Prosperity Agenda and Cooperation/Engagement.
Point of Contact (PoC) for UK Ministry of Defence (UK MoD) and Host Nation MoD supporting UK forces.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Activity – Military Operations:
- Manage the team to enable the timely permissions and logistic support for all UK Military Operations and exercises in the Host Nation;
- Support the DA in enhancing Host Nation and UK and multilateral interoperability;
- Maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders in support of UK/NATO alignment.
2. Business – UK Prosperity Agenda:
- Manage, and or provide, Defence Section support to MoD, Defence International Trade (DIT) and Embassy UK Trade Industry team.
3. Cooperation – Defence Activity other than Operations (DAOTO):
- Lead and or manage the organisation for all Defence Activity other than Operations, both in country and support Host Nation activity in UK when requested;

Support civilian requests of the Defence Section within resources.
4. Defence Section Capability:
- Oversee, manage and maintain the Defence Section capability at the highest level and champion positive behaviours at work;
- Maintain strong links with UK MoD Desk Officers ensuring reports are coordinated and submitted for Defence Section Activity, Finance, Risk and Audit;
- Manage and attend the in country FCDO / MOD / Embassy activity within the recognised frameworks and systems;
- Optimise Defence Section activity to ensure continued efficiency and effectiveness through lessons and best practice;
- Perform other duties as may be required.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework* or equivalent);
- Independent in oral and written Greek language skills (minimum B2/B1 for English and Greek according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*);
- European Driving Licence;
- Proficiency using MS tools (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Teams);
- Managing a small team delivering at pace.
- Working in international relations;
- Previous experience of working with military or Host Nation MOD.

This is a full-time, permanent position of 37.5hours per week.
The British Embassy offers a competitive remuneration package, 24 days annual leave entitlement (given pro-rata to staff on fixed-term contracts and/or staff working part-time), a training package and flexible working opportunities. Monthly salary for this position is EUR 2,275.65 (Gross) currently payable 14 times a year (as per Greek labour law). An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate.
The successful candidate must hold one of the following passports: UK, US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy is subject to terms and conditions service according to Greek employment law. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Greece and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
