Main purpose of job:
We are looking for a dynamic, high-calibre colleague with the right skills to support the Deputy High Commissioner by leading on the day to day running of the post. The successful candidate will additionally lead on the UK-India Trade and Investment relationship. Indian companies currently invest more in the UK than the rest of Western Europe combined. We need a colleague brings a strong contribution to maintain this top slot and play his/her part in the development of our strategy on both trade and investment for the next three years. Your role will require you to deliver the FDI targets for the states of Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and UT Chandigarh. Other key elements of the position include:
- To promote the UK as the preferred inward investment destination for Indian companies in the states above;
- Encourage high value investments including through technology tie ups, as well as research and development and joint venture partnerships;
- Act in support of the DHC at Post and the Inward Investment co-ordinator for the northern states and work closely with both officers to support delivering the pan-India inward investment targets to identify high value investment projects from the region. The post-holder’s must be judicious in his or her efforts to work and collaborate at all times with the Head of Inward Investment (North India) based in Delhi;
- Coordinate/work closely with the Deputy High Commissioner and counterparts in the region, DIT Senior Management Team and HQ on important delivering objectives and values of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office/Department for International Trade & Investment;
- Oversee the smooth running of post by delivering through Corporate Services team. The successful candidate will have key roles to play in respect of managing the post budget and post security;
- Management and development of various team members and overall leadership of the team by example.
You will be a key representative of the British Government for the Post and the Department for International Trade, in the states above maintaining key relationships with Indian Industrialists, High Net Value Individuals (HNIs) to encourage thought-leaders and key decision-makers in India to be ambassadors for FDI into the UK. You will develop and deliver a strong pipeline of current and future investment wins and support the wider DIT India effort across a range of corporate objectives. Roles and responsibilities:
To promote the UK as the ideal investment destination for potential and existing Indian investors and to work with them to help them set up and further operations in the UK.
To ensure that annual investment targets for the states are met and that a healthy pipeline of future investment projects is developed. You will be responsible for delivery against some challenging targets.
To lead on our participation in key events as a speaker and other kinds of tested activity with partner organisations such as NASSCOM, CII, FICCI, etc, in order to develop a healthy pipeline of future investment projects.
To build solid links to, and work in partnership with, the UK Government’s investment partners and multipliers in the UK (London and Partners, Local Enterprise Partnerships etc.) to ensure potential investors are provided with a seamless end-to-end service which consistently leads to investment successes in the UK.
STRATEGIC SUPPORT & LEADERSHIP:
- Provide strategic input and advice to DHC and other Senior Managers to optimise their involvement in trade and investment and wider activities of the post.
- Identify, build and maintain an effective network of senior contacts to support the delivery of wider Deputy High Commission teams and FCO/India objectives.
CORPORATE:
- Oversee delivery of Corporate Services, ensuring effective management of the budget, estate, security logistics and HR, compliance with audits of Security, Health & Safety and Technical Works.
- Play a key role in supporting the Deputy High Commissioner for VIP visits to, or events in, the region.
- As Post Security Officer, lead on post security, ensuring compliance with key directives and guidelines to provide appropriate security for post and staff.
To pick up and deliver against the Department for International Trade (DIT) strategic investment priorities in the region. To support the Deputy Trade and Investment Commissioners in refreshing these priorities based on feedback.
Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
Budget: All activities / campaigns to be delivered via the DIT Budget. The planned activities are meant to help DIT achieve the Region’s annual investment targets & build a strong network.
People: LM 1*C4(L); 1 *B3(L); CSO for 1*C4(L); 1*B3(L); 1*A1(L) AND 2 S BAND OFFICERS
Language expertise: English, Hindi and Punjabi.

Essential on arrival:
- Your portfolio of companies may already be part of your existing network of industry contacts, or they may be new relationships that you will build and nurture – alongside senior British High Commission representatives, where appropriate – to secure higher value investment wins for the UK.

Qualifications:
Graduate/post graduate. Candidates without the required educational qualifications but with exceptional practical experience will be considered.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant commercial/business experience.
- An in-depth understanding of Foreign Direct Investment sector and a strong network in the region are essential.
- Strong analytical and business skills to search out significant opportunities for investment into the UK market
- Tried and tested project management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, team working and people management skills. To lead and manage resource across grades.
- Ability to influence, lobby and articulate key messages and to work in a team will be essential.
- Experience of dealing with senior level decision makers of Indian national and state government. You will need to show a solid track record of dealing with senior level decision makers in the business world.
- Background will include senior level experience within the ICT, Life Sciences, Automotive, Aerospace, and Engineering or Technical consulting sectors.
- Experience of managing a budget effectively.
Desirable:
- Experience of working overseas or of managing overseas projects and investments.
- Experience of leading a team and delivering through others.
- Marketing and presentational skills.
- Experience of working in trade/export promotion.

SALARY PACKAGE:
For British High Commission (BHC) candidates, the Local Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.
For other than BHC candidates, salary will be INR 138,068 per month + 12% provident fund + 6% Special Allowance/Superannuation Fund.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided. Notional tax will be deducted if you are not liable to pay local tax.
