Communications, Press and Media

The British Embassy in Ljubljana is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Digital Communications Manager to lead on Embassy’s communication through digital channels –  leading on content creation, channel strategy, audience engagement and insight, as well as support to the Ambassador on Twitter.

The position holder will be

  • Producing high quality, engaging content – telling the story of the Embassy’s work and the bilateral relationship; and using topical issues to generate interest and build familiarity and positive perceptions of the UK, the Embassy and our work.
  • Helping the Embassy understand the digital landscape in Slovenia, through social listening and use of analytical tools; and to track and learn from the results of the Embassy’s own efforts online.
  • Supporting delivery of Embassy campaigns and public diplomacy projects, and help design them to maximise the digital communications opportunities

Main responsibilities will include:

Content creation (40% – two days a week on average) – We want you to develop and create compelling ‘owned’ content to support Embassy campaigns and build engagement with our audiences. This could span from written material to photography, video and even illustration or animation – telling stories rabout (for example) the UK and its values, the Embassy’s work and the UK’s relationship with Slovenia. Your own creative ideas and proposals will be welcomed, alongside content created around the Ambassador’s and the Embassy’s activities and campaigns.

Channel curation and partner engagement (20% – 1 day a week on average) – We want you to continue to grow and focus the reach of and engagement with our channels. You will also build working partnerships with like-minded organisations and influencers in Slovenia to help deepen the reach of our messages and campaigns. In addition to ‘owned’ content, you will build awareness of some of the wider work of the UK, by drawing on content from the UK’s global campaigns, online media and the like.  And you will have a key role supporting the Ambassador in building her own online profile and skills.

Planning & strategy (10% – 0.5 days a week on average) – In dialogue with the Head of the Team and colleagues across the Embassy, you will plan ahead to make the most of opportunities to develop content around the Embassy’s work (including planning e.g. photography and video production around major Embassy activities). You will also own the Embassy’s strategy for digital communication, stepping back to think about how we position ourselves to reach our audiences and achieve our goals through owned channels and partnerships, and different approaches to content.

Insight and analytics (10% 0.5 days a week on average) – Using social listening you will keep yourself – and the Embassy – informed about what our audiences and interested in, and what kinds of content or partnerships we should explore. We have a suite of analytical tools available to help you generate and act on insights about our audiences and those who follow our accounts. And you will track the impact of our digital output to understand what works (or doesn’t) and refine our strategies accordingly.

Projects (20% – 1 day a week on average) You will support our lead for projects and public diplomacy by helping develop and execute public diplomacy projects – campaigns, major visits, and events like Slovenia-UK Friendship Day.  This will include co-designing the event to maximise the digital communications opportunities and reach for our goals and messages.

We are looking for a creative, proactive and well-organised colleague to drive the Embassy’s digital communications, create engaging content and lead our engagement with audiences and influencers online.

This is a great opportunity to exercise creativity and leadership. We want you to bring some of your own ideas and style to the Embassy’s output online – helping us find the best ways to engage and connect with our audiences (including Slovenian youth, business, government, and academia), and achieve ‘cut-through’ for our messages. We’ll help you to learn about our work and our goals, and then empower you to explore different ways of achieving them. Reporting to the Head of Communications and Public Diplomacy, you will be encouraged to develop your own external contacts, project proposals and content. You’ll also be called on to advise the Ambassador on her own communications. That’s why we are looking for candidates with:

The ability to communicate effectively in English and Slovene (both oral and written, minimum C1 level*), in person and in writing – and ideally visually too. You will be a good writer who loves using language to make strong connections with our audience, in the right tone of voice for Embassy communications. You’ll need good interpersonal and stakeholder skills to form friendly working partnerships externally and within the Embassy. And you should have a good eye for what works and a willingness to learn more. (Experience with design/ photography/ video, and/or experience of marketing and comms campaigns, will be advantages.)

Imagination and an understanding of online audiences in Slovenia. You should be able to create content and partnerships that inspire conversations (and laughter). You should also have a good sense of ‘what works’ in Slovenia – what different audiences might respond to well (or poorly). And as a creative thinker, we’ll value you as a source of ideas, both for online communications and for wider team projects.

A sensitivity to the ‘big picture’ and an interest in being part of it. You’ll be culturally aware, interested in the UK and the wider world, and sensitive to what is relevant and/or controversial in Slovene public life. You’ll need good judgement. And you’ll care that your work is part of making a difference in the real world.

Focus, flexibility, and teamwork: The Embassy can get very busy – with demands for your time on local projects, and on global UK government priorities.  As in any job, unexpected events can mean things don’t always go to plan. You’ll be well organised and good at prioritising, focussing down on the actions that matter most and deliver results. You will also benefit from a strong ability to multitask, solve problems, and manage small projects. We are looking for candidates with resilience, the ability to adapt and be a supportive member of the Embassy team.

Energy and passion for what you do. We encourage people to think for themselves and actively contribute to the life of the Embassy – we’ll value your energy and enthusiasm. Feel free to bring a sense of fun!  It’s about your values too: we have a cheerful, can-do, and people-centred ethos. We hire good people. A positive, collaborative approach will go a long way.

We’d need you to have a solid background in professional social media communications – including creating content and managing channels. Experience of creating visual content (photgraphy/ video/ design/ illustration/ animation…) will be a strong advantage.

It would also be great to match the following:

  • Qualified to degree or equivalent level – ideally in marketing, or a field relevant to digital communications.
  • A good knowledge of social media platforms & tools (e.g.  MailChimp, Hootsuite, Brandwatch …)
  • Experience with Adobe CC suite software (e.g Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator) and design skills.
  • Experience in PR, or public sector, NGO or political communications.
  • Proven track record in planning / managing / delivering successful online campaigns; managing channels or online engagement; or analysis and insight in relation to audiences and partners online.

We are not looking for perfection (there’s no such thing)! We want candidates with potential and ambition to develop and contribute to the development of the wider Embassy team. We are committed to supporting you in this and there will be lots of opportunities available to you – see below “other benefits and conditions of employment” especially “Learning and Development”.
