Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy in Washington is seeking a highly motivated and creative individual for the position of Digital Communications Officer – Military and Defence. In the role, you will use social media and wider digital engagement to promote the work of the British Armed Forces within the United States – raising the profile of the wider UK-US defence relationship and strengthening public perceptions of the UK as the US’ most capable, international defence partner.
Your role will also provide support for defence comms and press engagement. You will work flexibly but systematically with colleagues in London, other British Embassy and wider network communication staff and UK military personnel based in the US to find strategic and powerful ways to promote the UK’s work through digital engagement and other channels.
The role would suit a proactive and enthusiastic self starter and who is adaptable and willing to take on new opportunities as they arise. The successful candidate will have previous experience in digital engagement and an interest in defence/national security would be beneficial.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
- Generate creative digital content to promote the UK-US defence relationship to a wide ranging American audience, including content gathered from UK Military in the US.
- Monitor digital innovations and social media trends and find unique opportunities for the promotion of the British Defence Services, and the wide UK-US defence relationship, in the US.
- Ensure defence communications activity are fed into a wider British Government cross-US network grid, and keep across a range off defence related engagements and events.
- Produce video and graphics for use in defence media campaigns.
- Work with the Head of Digital and the Chief Communications Officer (Defence) to enhance broader defence communications.
- Work closely with communications and defence colleagues to promote long-term events and campaigns through digital and other communications channels. Occasionally accompany senior defence officials on travel engagements within the US as required – providing social media updates, photographing public engagements and assisting with general press enquiries to support the Chief Communications Officer (Defence).
- Support the wider embassy communications team, including with duty shifts, assisting with communications engagement when necessary and being available for weekend/out of hours work.
- At least 2 years’ relevant experience in social media, including Twitter and Instagram
- Photography experience with proven ability to shoot and edit short videos – such as skills in Adobe Premiere and Photoshop
- Strong interpersonal skills and confidence in communicating with senior level officials, politicians or executives
- A proactive and enthusiastic self-starter with effective time management skills
- University degree or equivalent qualification
- An interest in/knowledge of defence and national security
- Experience in media and press relations, knowledge of US media landscape

Working patterns:
Remote working available, jobholder expected to go in 2-3 days per week.

On taking up post you will have to complete Data Protection training which is mandated for this post as well as in house training on defence computer systems. The learning and development opportunities, including through formal training courses, are excellent. The job provides scope to broaden knowledge and experience through getting involved in the breadth of UK/US defence engagement.
