Driver / Messenger

The British Embassy in Ankara is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas as is now looking to hire a Driver to operate vehicles in support of its operations in Ankara. Duties will include carrying passengers, collecting and delivering documents, routine maintenance of the vehicles and also performing safety checks for the vehicles. The post entails regular evening work, occasional overnight trips and frequent short-notice tasking. The driver is expected to be fully involved in all activities and to display a pleasant and professional demeanour at all times.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain the vehicles to an appropriately high standard of cleanliness at all times;
  • Maintain vehicles documentation, records and log sheets accurately;
  • Maintain vehicles ancillary equipment and other equipment issued to perform the above tasks;
  • Collect and deliver documents and other items as required;
  • Assist with other duties as required;
  • As this is a representational job role, the job holder will be expected to dress in an appropriate fashion and to maintain a neat and tidy appearance at all times when on duty (uniform will be provided). 

  • High school diploma;
  • Five (5) years full-time passenger transportation or delivery experience desirable;
  • Basic command (both oral and written) of English, Common European Framework level/equivalent A2 or above*;
  • Excellent command (both oral and written) of Turkish, Common European Framework level/equivalent C1 or above*;
  • Possession of a clean valid Turkish Driver’s License;
  • Operation and maintenance requirements of passenger vehicles (including 4×4);
  • Detailed knowledge of Turkish traffic laws, ordinances and rules;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Important notes:

  • Applicants must be willing to undergo a mandatory driving assessment and should be available to travel to the UK to attend a driving course if required;
  • Work in shifts/roster and irregular hours when required;
  • Please bear in mind in case you are invited for an interview your languages skills are going to be assessed.

  • Detailed knowledge of the geography of Ankara and routes through and to / from the city will be an asset.

This is a full-time permanent contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The monthly salary for this position is 848.38 USD gross+ 84.84 USD duty allowance gross S1 level. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of 2 months.
