The British Embassy Sarajevo is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit an Economic Officer.
Working as part of the British Embassy Sarajevo Policy and Programme Team, the Economic Officer provides advice on economic policy and helps to streamline programmes with policy objectives.
Roles and responsibilities
- Prepare reports and briefings on socio-economic developments, including: macro-economic analysis, state of play with International Financial Institutions, government economic policies, etc.
- Lead on all day-to-day economic policy related issues including Embassy’s relations with IFIs, reporting and advising Management on necessary actions to take.
- Perform in-depth research and analysis to prepare briefings, presentation, speeches and oral advice to support Embassy Management and the FCDO on long-term policy decisions, and economic policy developments. Inform and implement action in this field.
- Manage a wide range of external contacts with State, Entity and Cantonal representatives, NGOs, Institutions and representatives of the International Community. Lobby and advocate to BiH Governments and Parliaments for adoption of economic policy in areas like energy, transport, infrastructure, health etc or other project-related legislation.
- Together with other IC partners, lead collaboratively on the policy development and implementation of socio-economic reforms. Provide timely and in-depth advice to senior management on strategic decisions and manage day-to-day policy aspects.
- Advise Management and Programme teams and FCDO on how to align FCDO/Embassy policy objectives with programme portfolios to secure the maximum output.
- Potential to take project management lead on some bespoke projects.
- Proficient in English (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level according to the CEFR framework*)
- Proficient in at least one of the BiH constituent languages, i.e. Bosnian, Croatian or Serbian (both written and spoken)
- Economic policy experience, preferably from or with international organisations
- Project and programme management experience, preferably from or with international organisations
- Experience in providing policy advice in the field of political economy & macro-economics
- Excellent problem solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to network and work collaboratively with others
- Ability to think creatively and take a proactive role in achieving team objectives
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Flexibility and ability to learn quickly
- Intermediate skills with MS Word and Excel
- Strong understanding of BiH political and governmental landscape and experience of working with various levels (State, Entity, local)
- Clean driving licence

Our Conditions:
This is a full-time position of 5 working days (41 hours per week). The position is offered upon successful completion of three month probation period by mutual agreement, initially for one year with the possibility of renewal.
The monthly salary for this position is 4,203.00 BAM gross per month. In addition, members of staff receive a meal allowance and transport allowance as per Terms & Conditions.
The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance. The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation in Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to apply.
Staff members recruited locally by the British Embassy Sarajevo are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Bosnian employment law and social contributions will be paid accordingly.
