The British Embassy in Azerbaijan is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an Energy Officer to provide maternity cover in the Department for International Trade team until mid April 2022.
This is an exciting and rare opportunity to join the British Embassy’s trade and investment team in Baku. Your role will be to lead the Embassy’s work to support Azerbaijan’s energy transition by introducing Azeri companies, policy makers and influencers to UK companies with clean energy capability. You will help UK firms in Azerbaijan access clean energy opportunities in Eastern Europe and Central Asia by working with other embassies in the region. You will also help identify market access issues facing UK energy companies in Azerbaijan and work with embassy colleagues to resolve them.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Work as an integral part of the British Embassy’s Commercial and Energy Team to deliver DIT energy targets identify high value clean energy project opportunities and promote UK prosperity objectives and enhance UK exports to Azerbaijan;
- Lead on activities of the UK-Azerbaijan Partnership on Clean Energy Transition
- Provide specific energy input to the UK-Azerbaijan Joint Intergovernmental Commission;
- Lobby on behalf of UK companies with leading stakeholders to help secure business or resolve market access issues;
- Proactively gather intelligence for the energy sector and nurture collaboration with the wider team that lead political, economic and programme work;
- Contribute fully to all official/VIP visits by assisting with programmes, briefing materials, energy analysis for visiting UK ministers and officials;
- Produce up to date Industry Market Sector reports and identify and report business opportunities for UK companies in Azerbaijan and immediate region;
- Maintain regular contact with local and foreign companies, Ministries and government organisations, to sustain a wide-range of energy relationships;
- Represent the Embassy and DIT at related conferences and seminars, to undertake public speaking engagements, to chair roundtables, to provide technical interpretation and feedback reports;
- Support wider Embassy public diplomacy activities when called upon, including association with various committees, accompanying the Ambassador/DHMs on outside calls, marketing and more general political and economic assistance;
- Attract, retain and increase UK investment into Azerbaijan by identifying UK companies and partners with the potential to work with UK providers and support to existing trade;
- Maintain regular contact with potential investors, provide advice and practical support for their business strategy;
- Work closely with DIT teams in the UK and Turkey to implement DIT’s EECAN business plan;
- Develop a pipeline of future trade opportunities; do relevant research and analysis, identify new methods of attracting potential investors;
- Plan and deliver events and campaigns to promote UK businesses;
- Effectively and proactively develop appropriate networks and relationships with DIT headquarters in the UK, Azerbaijan and EU business/trade associations and the Azerbaijan private sector.
- Fluent written and spoken English (minimum level required C1 under the CEFRL or equivalent*);
- Knowledge of the energy sector (UK and Azerbaijan);
- Network and existing relationships in the energy sector;
- Private sector and government experience.
- Fluent written and spoken Azerbaijani (minimum level required C1 under the CEFRL or equivalent*).

This is a full-time and maternity leave cover position, five working days, 40 hours net per week.
The salary is USD 2,173.86 gross per month and shall be paid in AZN monthly.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Azerbaijan is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service of the FCDO according to local labour legislation.
