The British Embassy in Paris is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s France Network including offices in Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille and representation to international organisations in Paris (OECD and UNESCO) and Strasbourg (CoE).

The British Embassy is looking for an EU Policy Officer to join the EU team, part of the wider Europe & Global Issues Section (EGIS). This is a cross-cutting role in a dynamic team that covers a wide range of thematic policy areas including economy, health, transport, development, science, education, energy and environment as well as institutions including the EU, G7, and G20. The successful candidate will support the Head of the EU team, focusing on monitoring implementation of UK-EU agreements (the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) and the Withdrawal Agreement (WA)), reporting on France’s wider EU policy, and supporting other thematic policy areas.

The ideal candidate will have experience of EU policy-making and engaging with senior interlocutors. You will coordinate work across teams and be expected to work flexibly depending on changing priorities. Using your networks and understanding of French thinking, you will influence UK government policy-making at a time of strategic change for the UK as we build our post-EU exit relationship with one of our most important bilateral partners.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Reporting & Analysis: monitor and provide insightful reporting and analysis on France’s EU policy development within government, parliament, think tanks and civil society. The coming year will be a significant one, with French Presidential elections and France’s EU Council presidency in 2022;
  • Engagement: provide strategic advice on how to engage and influence the French government, MPs and MEPs. Organise visits and video calls with UK officials/Ministers to create a meaningful dialogue on our future relationship;
  • Engagement: develop and maintain a diverse network of contacts across government, political, academic and civil society spheres with an interest in France’s EU policy. Use this network to influence policy development and to provide insight to reporting;
  • Coordination & building expertise: coordinate on EU policy engagement across the France Network ensuring colleagues are aware of the latest UK government policy positions. Build wider understanding of EU policy developments across the France Network and play an active role in the FCDO Europe Expertise network;
  • Corporate: take on a corporate role among the many on offer, for example, in crisis preparedness, the green team, diversity & inclusion, social, and more.

  • Fluency in French and English (both oral and written, minimum C1 level*);
  • Graduate-level qualification;
  • Excellent understanding of European institutions and politics;
  • Excellent analytical and communications skills;
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills;
  • Ability to work flexibly and across teams;
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
