The British Embassy in Madrid is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit a GOV.UK Content and publishing officer (Communications).

The main purpose of the role is to deliver effective communication on GOV.UK for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This includes corporate communications from the UK, guidance to UK nationals abroad, and regional publishing for UK embassies, high commissions and consulates in Europe and the Americas.

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 

Content design and management:

  • Collaborate with communication, policy and service delivery colleagues to write and review content for GOV.UK, ensuring new content meets Government Digital Service (GDS) editorial guidelines and user needs;
  • Use data analysis to inform content design work, including Google Analytics and website feedback. Produce evaluation reports on key GOV.UK content for stakeholders;
  • Work with policy and service colleagues to project-manage information required to publish new content or services on GOV.UK, as part of larger or global projects.

Web publishing:

  • Review and publish corporate content on GOV.UK for policy officials and other internal stakeholders, ensuring content meets GDS guidance including accessibility legislation;
  • Support UK embassies, high commissions and consulates to review and publish updates to their GOV.UK content, including worldwide news, contact information, and guidance for British nationals living and travelling abroad. Lead for content from embassies, high commissions and consulates in Europe, and provide regular support for the Americas;
  • Review and publish corporate FCDO blogs in line with departmental best practice; support the administration of the blog website.

Quality control:

  • Ensure all content published on GOV.UK is high editorial quality and meets GDS guidelines, including accessibility;
  • Carry out regular quality checks on GOV.UK content published by staff in Europe and the Americas regions. Provide regular feedback, guidance and training to regional publishers and policy clients. Seek advice from senior colleagues where appropriate and work with staff in the regions to improve content before publishing;
  • Provide bespoke training and support for new GOV.UK publishers in the Europe and the Americas to support high editorial quality.

General support:

  • Respond to questions from web publishers in the UK and in geographic regions about how to publish on GOV.UK Publisher;
  • Support the delivery of communication by British Embassy Madrid and wider Spain network;
  • Contribute to corporate embassy activities, where appropriate.

  • Fluency in English (both oral and written, minimum C2 level*);
  • At least 2 years’ experience working on GOV.UK and/or digital publishing using a content management system, or in a digital communication role;
  • Experience delivering projects across a large or global organisation;
  • Experience writing corporate content and working to organisational editorial guidelines;
  • Proven proofreading and editing skills, with strong attention to detail;
  • Effective communication and customer-service skills;
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team;
  • Excellent IT skills (with proficient Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, Outlook skills).

  • Evidence of identifying user needs and clear user journeys to design content;
  • Experience in using data to inform decisions, and seeking user feedback.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for B3 grade, for 12 months, with possibility of renewal. Normal working hours are 37.5 per week.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
