We are looking for a Head of Investment based at the British Embassy in Brussels to lead the small and dynamic Belgian – Luxembourg Investment team.
Working for the Department for International Trade (DIT), you will lead the investment team and deliver the business services to support inward investment from Belgium and Luxembourg to the UK. The aim is to attract and retain high value investment projects, adding measurable value to direct investment in the UK. The successful candidate will be responsible for building close relationships with existing investors, as well as identifying potential new investors across a range of sectors. The investment team works to challenging targets across a range of sectors, from Life Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing, Food and Drink, Automotive, Renewable Energy, Digital Economy and Financial Services.
This is a challenging, varied and high profile role and presents an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and commercially driven professional with excellent account management and relevant business experience. Applicants should ideally be able to start as soon as possible.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for developing and delivering the Belgium and Luxembourg investment business plan;
- Lead the small and dynamic Belgium and Luxembourg investment team;
- Market the UK as the number one business investment location and attract high value investment projects into the UK through active targeting and working closely with clients in realising their investment objectives;
- Organise and present at sector based activities (e.g. seminars, briefings, etc.);
- Be responsible for the cultivation and maintenance of professional relationships including key account management of large corporations and key investors;
- Engage with relevant stakeholders and partners in the UK, Belgium and Luxembourg;
- Represent DIT both internally as well as at external events;
- Contribute to the wider DIT and Embassy objectives;
- In light of the changing environment around the UK Missions, this role is not limited to the tasks described above; responsibilities may evolve through time. Any change of responsibilities will be reflected in the job description.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and delivering the investment business plan, building close relationships with existing investors, as well as identifying potential new investors across a range of sectors.
- A self-starter, able to show initiative and work independently and at pace, without losing sight of priorities, motivated to deliver results against a set objectives and deadlines;
- Commercially focussed with a strong B2B background in an international environment;
- Excellent team player with flexible and adaptable approach to work;
- Aptitude to lead, motivate and develop staff;
- Good interpersonal, influencing and relationship building skills to be able to develop and maintain a network of key contacts. Ability to deal with customers at the most senior levels of decision making;
- Strong and effective networker; committed to building long-term relationships;
- Effective communication skills (both written and verbal), strong presentation skills with experience of public speaking;
- Full professional proficiency in English, including excellent writing skills (written and spoken, minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework*).
- Experience in a marketing, business development, consultancy or trade/investment promotion discipline;
- A good understanding of the UK and/or Belgian business environment including business drivers;
- Knowledge of or previous work experience in any of the priority sectors listed;
- Experience with managing a team;
- Business level knowledge of French and/or Dutch language (both oral and written).

This is a permanent full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. The monthly gross salary for this position is € 5,471.76, C4 level. In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13 month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, optional hospitalisation insurance (subject to monthly employee contribution), reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.
Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.
The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
Visa/passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.

* Please refer to the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages”. We are looking for a C2 level or equivalent. CEFR indicates Level C2 as mastery or proficiency level which can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of Proficient meaning even in more complex situations.
