Main purpose of job

This is a dynamic role for an exceptional individual to join Department for International Trade (DIT) Hong Kong team as the Head of Sustainable Innovation to help to advance the trade and investment ambitions articulated in the DIT Hong Kong Trade Plan. The post holder will report to the Associate Director of Innovation and Technology, the core focus of the job is to drive the service delivery of the Innovation and Technology sector strategy.

The person in this role will help promote the UK as the leading country for Green and Sustainable Technology in order to help Hong Kong achieve its target of Net Zero by 2050 and will help nurture innovative Hong Kong companies expand their business to the UK, as well as foster pioneering UK companies expand into Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. 

This is a new role to DIT Hong Kong and therefore requires an ideal candidate who can build it from the ground up and proactively reach out to companies who are steering the way in Green and Sustainable strategy, sharing ideas and promoting the work we are dedicated to deliver.

Based in British Consulate-General Hong Kong, the DIT Hong Kong team offers a fast-paced place to work as the office covers opportunities in Hong Kong and Macau, as well as South China in collaboration with the rest of the DIT China teams led by Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for China and Hong Kong.

The Sector 

Hong Kong aims to be one of the Asia’s leading cities on climate action and has pledged to eliminate carbon emissions by 2050. The HK$200 million Green Tech fund launched in Dec 2020 encourages the development of new technologies to revamp the city’s energy sector which is still heavily dependent on carbon-intensive coal and support vital research into new energy vehicles, waste management, green tech and new energy sources, such as green hydrogen which has recently been recognised as a solution to decarbonising energy-intensive sectors. The UK is also recognising the importance of this and in Feb 2021, the UK Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (UKHFCA) released a roadmap for green hydrogen deployment by 2050. The UK Government is taking action to remain the leader in hydrogen energy and continue spearheading the global decarbonisation movement.

Main Responsibilities

Lead and deliver trade and investment service delivery (60%)

  • Play a leading role in trade and investment service delivery, which including Export Wins, Foreign Direct Investment projects, Capital Investment, Overseas Market Introduction Services, as well as other missions, events and activities. 
  • As the sector specialist, gather intelligence, conduct research, establish technical expertise, identify risks and provide initial analysis of marketing trends and opportunities to support Associate Director’s decision making and business planning. 
  • Advise and work with the Marketing and Communications teams in campaign development, as well as steering their promotional activities with sector input.

Relationship management (20%)

  • Be an excellent communicator with strong marketing and business development acumen who plays an active role in building and expanding relationships with counterparts of key organisations in the Green and Sustainable sector, which include but are not limited to intermediaries, trade associations and government departments to drive business results
  • Maintain a close working relationship with internal stakeholders including other sector leads in DIT HK, DIT China and HQ. 
  • Deputise to the Associate Director and handle any other representational duties as required 

Resources management (10%) 

  • Management of any delegated activity budget and ensure compliance with relevant guidance
  • Contribute to the income generation strategies by securing sponsorship 

Organisational support (10%) 

  • Support the Associate Director in planning, managing and following up on high level visits and events that contribute to the Innovation and Technology targets

The jobholder may be required to travel. Some work (including travel) will be required during the evenings and occasionally weekends, for which time off in lieu (where applicable) will be given. Successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as possible.

  • Undergraduate degree in business, international trade or other relevant areas and minimum three years working experience in business development, sales or marketing, OR minimum six years working experiences in business development, sales or marketing 
  • Good understanding of international trade and investment in particular to Green tech and innovation
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills with strong customer-facing background 
  • Strong organisational and project management skills 
  • Good IT skills and familiarity with MS Office applications
  • An adaptable self-starter with enthusiasm and energy to work alone as well as in a team 
  • Sound analytical skills and ability to conduct market research 

Language requirements:

  • Previous experience of working across teams and stakeholders based across multiple locations
