Main purpose of the job

This is a dynamic role for an exceptional individual to join the Department for International Trade (DIT), British Consulate General Hong Kong, as the Trade and Investment Adviser to assist the Innovation and Technology team in delivering its’ objectives and targets as part of the wider DIT Hong Kong Business Plan, and UK Government’s strategy to deliver economic prosperity to the UK and Hong Kong.

Reporting to the Head of Technology, the core focus of the job is to provide administrative support to drive the promotion of the UK as the ideal country partner for commercial collaboration and success with Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area of Mainland China in areas of innovation, technology, research and development and sustainability.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate their ability to work both independently and with senior stakeholders, as well as their competence to develop skills in an international, commercial and government settings. Opportunities to expand their professional network may arise which strong interpersonal skills will also be an advantage.

Main Responsibilities

Organisational support (50%)

  • Provide general administrative support to senior members of the team, including but not limited to data input, meeting and travel arrangements, CRM database management, procurement management, and performance tracking
  • Undertake market research and build intelligence of trends and developments within the sector
  • Develop a broad understanding of the Innovation and Technology team’s objectives and campaigns in order to provide sector input and advices to the Marketing and team in delivering priority events, PR and communications plans
  • Assist high level visits in terms of travel logistics and programme arrangements
  • Represent the wider team and participate proactively in various communities and committees for feedback and suggestions
  • Cover other advisers and undertake similar administrative work in other teams and sectors when needed

Service delivery (50%)

  • Reply to both internal and commercial enquiries from UK, Hong Kong and Macao companies
  • Identify, draft and publish export opportunities on great.gov.uk
  • Assist the delivery of Export Wins, Overseas Direct Investment Wins, Foreign Direct Investment Projects, Capital Investment, Overseas Market Introduction Services and other business missions by conducting market research, business matching, coordinating visit programme, organising events, and documenting data and progresses

The Innovation and Technology sector focuses on PropTech/InfraTech, Smart Cities, Cybersecurity, MedTech/HealthTech/BioTech, EdTech, Big Data, AI and Waste Management, all of which will feed in to the wider focus of sustainability and Greentech.

Based in British Consulate-General Hong Kong, the DIT Hong Kong team offers a fast-paced place to work as the office covers opportunities in Hong Kong and Macau, as well as South China in collaboration with the rest of the DIT China teams led by Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for China and Hong Kong.

  • The jobholder may be required to travel and any travel would be monitored in line with COVID-19 situation. Some work (including travel) will be required during the evenings and occasionally weekends, for which time off in lieu (where applicable) will be given.
  • This position is open to Hong Kong citizens, permanent residents, and partners/dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Hong Kong. Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. Candidates must have or be able to obtain work authorisation for Hong Kong in order to apply. Successful candidate required to start as soon as possible.

This is a supporting role with client-facing opportunities where outstanding organisational and communication skills are they key requirements for the role.

  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Exceptional interpersonal and language skills with professional and diplomatic demeanour
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills, with the ability to deliver high quality work with pace
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills particularly in the use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • High self-motivation, flexible, resilient and proactive attitude
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Appropriate residence status or a valid working visa in Hong Kong

  • Fluency in Cantonese and/or Mandarin, both spoken and written
  • Minimum of 2+ years of relevant full-time work experience
  • Broad knowledge of, or demonstrable interest in, the UK and Hong Kong’s Innovation and Technology Industries
  • Experience of administrative support, marketing, event and budget management and/or business development
