Main purpose of job:

As part of the Department for International Trade (DIT) in Mexico, the primary purpose of this position is to support the Head of the Infrastructure team to promote infrastructure projects in Mexico to suitable UK firms, in order to incentivise and increase UK participation in these projects, and the UK’s overall levels of trade with Mexico. The job entails engaging with key contacts, companies and partners in the UK and Mexico, carrying out business and market research to share commercial intelligence with interested parties, coordinating events and trade missions, drafting reports and sector updates, and keeping track of administrative tasks through organisation and prioritisation skills. The role will also involve working across a virtual team (of policy, programme and commercial colleagues) to deliver trade and investment objectives as part of a cross Embassy infrastructure strategy, which includes a focus on clean growth.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) works with UK businesses to support UK exports and bilateral investment in Mexico. Headquartered at the British Embassy in Mexico City, DIT Mexico works across over ten priority sectors, with regional offices in Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Identifying potential key contacts both in Mexico and the UK, particularly in line with new DIT strategies such as clean growth, and state-level engagement in Mexico;
  • Conducting business and market research as needed;
  • Monitoring the media/ internet for opportunities and bringing relevant information to the attention of colleagues in the infrastructure team, at DIT HQ in the UK, and in other parts of the embassy in Mexico;
  • Following up on enquiries of UK companies;
  • Attending meetings with relevant sector stakeholders as well as relevant trade fairs and exhibitions (when needed);
  • Assisting in the organisation of trade promotion events and missions;
  • Preparing sector-focused presentations;
  • Keeping track of and updating  databases (including assistance given to UK companies);
  • Assisting in communication with members of the DIT regional Infrastructure campaign from other markets across LATAC, ensuring information and best practice sharing;
  • Performing other administrative tasks as required;
  • Supporting the Head of Infrastructure with market access work, opening the Mexican market for UK companies;
  • There may be occasional requirement to travel to other locations within and outside Mexico.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

  • A completed or in progress Bachelor’s degree in business, international relations, or a related field;
  • Ability to carry out research and complete administrative tasks on time and to a high standard;
  • Track record as a self-starter;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Some English/Spanish translation ability;
  • Clear motivation and personal commitment to meeting challenging targets;
  • Valid passport; the ability to attend official functions outside of office hours; and the ability to undertake domestic and international air travel, including overnight stays; 
  • Language: English and Spanish (fluent written and spoken).

  • Experience or knowledge of the infrastructure sector (or ability to gain knowledge quickly).

DIT offers a flexible working policy and limited homeworking arrangements on agreement with line manager.

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right.  The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.  

The successful post holder may be based in Guadalajara, Monterrey or Mexico City. If job holder based in Guadalajara or Monterrey, frequent travel to Mexico City will be required.
