The British Embassy in Madrid is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit an Intern for the Department for International Trade (DIT). 

This is an excellent opportunity to join the commercial department of the British Consulate General in Barcelona, at an exciting time for the UK overseas network.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the team’s Clean Growth Advisor, helping to support the UK’s climate and clean growth agenda in the aftermath of the COP26 climate summit held in Glasgow in November. They will respond to enquiries from UK companies interested in selling their products and services into the Spanish market, and to support Spanish companies looking to invest in the UK. This will include analysis of market opportunities across a number of different green sectors (sustainable mobility, circular economy, renewables etc.).

The successful candidate will have opportunities to work in areas such as event management, relationship with UK and Spanish companies, business reporting, market research and social media communications.  

They will also analyse trends in the UK-Spain commercial relationship that will help guide the team’s priorities and support engagement with Spanish businesses.

The internship provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a high-performing team operating in an international environment.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Exports/investment: support team in the delivery of services to British exporters and potential Spanish investors in the UK  (market research by sector, scanning news for investment leads, cold calling, visit arrangements).
  • Events: Contribute to the organisation and running of high-profile events and webinars related to the climate agenda.
  • Communications: Contribute to the design and content of the team’s Clean Growth website and brochures of UK companies, as well as supporting social media activity when needed.
  • Analysis: Scanning news and surveys to help the team understand and resolve any problems that businesses are having while trading. Using this information and their own trade and investment data analysis to provide ad hoc factual briefing for the Ambassador, ministers and colleagues to feed into meetings, speeches, press articles, visits and events.

 

 

  • Full professional proficiency in English and Spanish, including excellent writing skills (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Ability to work remotely as part of a team as well as on own initiative when required;
  • Dynamic and hardworking, with ability to work under pressure and juggle competing deadlines;
  • High level of motivation and strong will to learn;
  • Proactiveness and team worker;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and Power Point);
  • Ability to look for information about a company or sector on the Internet and obtain information by phone.

  • Understanding of Environmental, Social and Governance policies and/or familiarity with the circular economy industry;
  • Understanding of international trade issues;
  • Education background in trade, economics, mathematics or statistics, and strong analytical and numerical skills, would be a bonus;
  • Proficiency with Excel.

This is a full-time and temporary internship contract up to 6 months (provided both parties agree and there is a valid agreement with the university throughout the whole period).

Normal working hours are 25 per week.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
