Main purpose of job:

The jobholder will support delivery of the Japan Network’s pro-active marketing and campaign work for key audiences including UK exporters and Japanese investors; in particular for the GREAT activities planned,  liaise directly with external vendors and manage core Japanese-language marketing collateral, tools and products for British government target audiences in Japan.

All of the roles and responsibilities in this job help to develop stronger business relationships, partnerships and increase trade between British and Japanese companies.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

30%  – Be at the centre of Embassy-wide campaign work (such as COP26), particularly supporting the Department of International Trade, in trade and investment activities, (currently supporting the ongoing GREAT Seasons) as well as the core pillars of the Industrial strategy, alongside other key Goverment initiatives such as COP 26 to ensure marketing and communications is built in to the planning and delivery of core activity. This will involve a pro-active approach to coordinate with HQ teams, the regional marketing hub in Hong Kong and colleagues in the region. 

Lead coordination and development of Embassy GREAT branding for all major events, exhibitions and trade missions. This includes creative development of high impact visual branding working with in-network designers, procurement of new marketing collateral and ensuring regular inventory of assets is updated with the Marketing Assistant’s support.

35% – Coordination of the UKIJ website, to reflect the trade and investment activities, including GREAT Season activities, as well as other key initiatives supporting all sectors. Specifically: Management of contractors and writers to ensure planned articles are published on-time. Devise content calendar with relevant content and seek collaboration from teams for new articles/events. Upload completed articles to the website and manage image of the website. Work closely with Social Media lead to draft and post relevant content on UK Embassy shared social media channels to ensure synergy between articles and Social media.

Work with Digital Specialist to understand website analysis reports (incl. use of Google Analytics), making suggestions for future content and suggest ways to increase traffic to website.  

20% – Coordination of the DIT Newsletter and the PM Highlights, and other relevant internal comms opportunities. Specifically: Regular communication with relevant sector teams to obtain content; setting deadlines and checking drafts; working closely with MCM colleagues to agree schedule and provide finalised content in time for the newsletter to be launched via our CRM tool.

Create analysis of newsletter traffic, conduct split tests, and tailor future content.

Suggest and research ways to increase open rates of newsletter, and analyse current customer profile to understand their needs.  

As needed support the wider team in management of the Embassy’s CRM and email communications 

Work with Digital Specialist and Social Media lead to compile monthly reports on marketing activities.  

15% – Demonstrate leadership and provide pro-active guidance to effectively manage the marketing intern

Provide translation support and quality checks (English>Japanese) on new reports, articles, copy for branded visuals.

Wider team support during events, on digital channels and online platforms as well as assisting photo shoots / video shoots when necessary.

The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals.

All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.

Working patterns: 37.5 hours per week

The British Embassy, Tokyo supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, working remotely for one day a week, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.

Occasional out of hours work may be required for larger events and Ministerial visits.

Any additional time worked will be compensated by time off in lieu
