Main purpose of job:
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our times and there has never been a better time to be working in the field of promoting renewables and clean energy opportunities between UK and Japan; two of the largest economies of the world to help deliver Net Zero Emissions by 2050 and to provide energy security for their people.
This is a fast paced role that requires strategic thinking skills, ability to plan and deliver large promotional events targeted at business and strong people and stakeholder management skills. A majority (60%) of your time will be spent on leading the Renewables energy trade team, developing and delivering a strategic programme of activity to increase UK renewables exports to Japan through supporting UK businesses to enter and grow in the Japanese market. Also, creating the right conditions for clean energy exports through collaboration with key UK and Japan stakeholders across government, industry and civil society. The remainder (40%) of your time will be spent on supporting Japanese capital investment into UK clean energy sectors, and working to deliver UK/Japan collaboration on third country infrastructure projects.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
- Lead the Renewables energy trade team. Devise, deliver and lead on a strategic programme of activity (i.e. visits, trade fairs, seminars and other events) to increase UK exports to Japan through supporting UK businesses to enter and grow in the Japanese market, and creating the right conditions for clean energy exports through collaboration with key UK and Japan stakeholders across government, industry and civil society.
- Develop expertise in renewables and clean energy and build a strong network of contacts. Use this expertise to engage with stakeholders and to promote the UK export offer in Japan.
- Follow Japanese government policy updates and report to colleagues in the Japan network (embassy and consulate general) and in the UK including preparing analysis related to UK clean energy objectives.
- Promote all aspects of energy and infrastructure between the UK and Japan, including increasing Japanese investment into the UK, supporting UK companies in Japan and in partnership with Japanese companies in third country markets and policy cooperation, in particular in the field of decarbonisation.
- Attend meetings with senior staff supporting them in meetings and reporting back on the discussion to UK colleagues.
- Provide supportive and effective line management for two members of staff.
- Take on a corporate task that delivers wider embassy objectives, proactively working with members of other teams. Take on and prepare for a crisis role.

We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.
All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.
Working patterns:
The British Embassy, Tokyo supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, part-time, remote working, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and/or
- A minimum of 4+ years of experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working in within government, for a research organisation or for an NGO preferably in trade, climate change or cleaner energy or other area of social or environmental policy.
- Good understanding of international trade promotion, capital investment and renewables/clean energy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Including written English-language reporting skills.
- Excellent networking skills
Language requirements:
- Japanese and English Language ability
- Fluent level Japanese with strong, business level English
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field.
- Strong knowledge or background of Japanese and/or UK clean energy trade promotion, capital investment work, and/or infrastructure policy.
