Main purpose of job:
To support UK businesses exporting products and services to the Japanese nuclear industry, and support investment in the UK nuclear industry from Japan. To generate market intelligence for UK businesses. To support delivery of UK nuclear policy objectives in Japan.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

As Senior Trade Officer, you will support UK businesses exporting products and services to the Japanese nuclear industry, and promote investment in the UK nuclear industry from Japan. You will be expected to generate market intelligence for UK businesses and help in the delivery of UK nuclear policy objectives in Japan.
You will engage with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders, including senior contacts as needed.
Nuclear export and investment opportunities (60%)
- Develop expertise in the UK and Japanese nuclear industries and perform market research to generate new opportunities for UK nuclear business to export to Japan
- Build a strong network of contacts across government, academia and industry in both countries and utilize and maintain existing network.
- Manage and support key existing UK projects to ensure successful delivery
- Respond to enquiries from UK companies seeking opportunities in the Japanese nuclear market
- Devise, deliver and lead on programmes, seminars and other events to showcase UK nuclear capabilities to Japanese stakeholders
Help build environment for future nuclear business opportunities in Japan (30%)
- Understand nuclear policy positions in the UK and Japan and use this knowledge to identify opportunities to move forward wider UK nuclear objectives
- Identify ways to use Japanese nuclear policy position to promote UK businesses’ commercial opportunities
- Devise, deliver and lead on programmes, seminars and other events that help build the environment for future business opportunities for the UK
Corporate responsibilities and wider team support (10%)
- Provide cover, advice and act as an additional resource to the section head and wider energy & infrastructure team
- Complete corporate tasks that delivers wider embassy objectives, proactively working with members of other teams
All staff in British Embassy Tokyo, take on a crisis role for crisis exercises. You will be also be asked to join a crisis team and attend crisis exercises.
Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
No direct line management responsibility but some responsibility for directing activities of other team members
Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.
All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.
Working patterns:
The British Embassy, Tokyo supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, part-time, remote working, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and/or
- A minimum of 3+ years of experience working in a relevant field
- Good level of technical and scientific understanding
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including written English-language reporting skills
- Excellent networking skills
- Language requirements: Fluent level Japanese with strong, business level English
- Experience in the nuclear industry
