Main purpose of job:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is responsible for bringing together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment, and help businesses succeed, delivering a new trade policy framework as the UK leaves the EU, and promotiong British trade and investment across the world. Reporting to the senior market access advisor in the DIT team based in the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, the job holder will focus on breaking down barriers to trade and investment and contribute to the delivery of a new trade policy framework. The job holder will be required to work with DIT and other colleagues across the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur and external business organisations in Malaysia, as well as with government and industry partners in the UK and Malaysia. The job holder will research, collate and analyse data and information from a variety of sources relevant to the design and delivery of action plans to break down specific barriers to trade and investment; will be part of the UK secretariat to the Joint Committee on Bilateral Trade & Investment Co-operation, a G-G dialogue which seeks to grow trade and investment between the UK and Malaysia; and, will be the DIT lead officer in Malaysia for matters relating to trade policy including CPTPP, RCEP, WTO, etc.

Roles and responsibilities:

Action Plans: Working with colleagues in the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, particularly from the DIT and Prosperity teams, as well as with British companies and business organisations in Malaysia and the UK and UK government partners in London to research, gather and analyse data and information to serve as the basis for the design, development and delivery of action plans to tackle specific barriers to trade and investment.

Joint Committee: As part of the UK Secretariat, to manage the logistics and administration of the annual meeting, interim meetings of officials and interim meetings of Working Groups, including monitoring and reporting on progress, and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, including Malaysian government officials, to ensure delivery of a series of well-planned, outcome focused meetings take place over the course of the year.

Policy: To build a strong network of contacts including from government, think tanks and business support organisations relevant to trade policy priorities, to report on trade policy developments and make recommendations for engagement on particular issues.

Other: Supporting relevant inbound and outbound visits, e.g. by senior officials and Ministers, and events. Contributing to the wider work of the British High Commission.

There is a comprehensive L&D offer from the British High Commission, which covers personal and career development. There is also a growing DIT offer which includes both formal and on-the-job training on the work of the Department for International Trade.

The British High Commission Malaysia supports and promotes flexible working.  The standard working hours for the BHC are 8:00am to 4:30 pm. We are happy to offer a variety of flexible working patterns, including non-standard working hours, working remotely or working compressed hours. However, due to the nature of the role, there will be a requirement for occasional out of hours work around events and visits. Time off in lieu can be offered to make up for out of hours work.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment and security checks. Staff who are locally recruited by the British High Commission are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. Non-Malaysian nationals must either hold, or be able to secure, a work permit.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
