Main purpose of job:

To develop, implement and effectively manage International Programme projects in Malaysia, with a focus on supporting institutional reform.  Working closely with policy leads within the British High Commission (BHC) and external project partners to ensure effective delivery of projects that have real impact in support of UK objectives.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Project Design

  • Build understanding of UK policy priorities in Malaysia, with a focus on institutional reform and human rights.
  • Spot opportunities for project interventions.
  • Work with policy leads across the BHC to design projects, in line with UK project guidelines. 

Project Delivery

  • Manage direct delivery projects, with oversight from policy leads, by:
  • Organising inward and outward visits, putting together programmes, and managing logistics.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with key external stakeholders. 
  • Manage tendering process for any external project implementers.
  • Manage project finances using accounting tools to provide accurate forecasts of spend (training provided).
  • Work with the Communications Team to promote UK project work in Malaysia.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Meet regular project reporting requirements.
  • Attend project related activity and events.
  • Feed into the cross-mission Programme Board process.
  • Demonstrate projects are achieving value for money.
  • Support bidding process for future funding. 

Projects in 2021/22 will focus on institutional reform, including supporting parliamentary, media, and modern slavery reform in Malaysia.  Priorities and funding available are reviewed each year.

IP funding for 2021/22 is £60k

Language requirements:

Language: English

Level of language required:  English (fluent spoken and written)

The role being advertised is a fixed-term contract of 6 months (subject to actual start date) (to 31 March 2022 only) in Kuala Lumpur.

We are looking for a candidate who can preferably start ASAP.

The British High Commission offers a competitive remuneration package, benefits, leave entitlement of 20 days per annum (calculated on pro rata basis) and works hard to provide L&D opportunities to staff.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.

Working patterns:

The British High Commission (BHC) Malaysia supports and promotes flexible working.  The standard working hours for the BHC are 8:00am to 4:30 pm.
