Main purpose of job | He whakārapopotanga:

The bilateral relationship with New Zealand is a priority for the UK. Our work covers the full range of UK government interests – political, trade, defence, science, economics, visas and consular policy. We operate in a fascinating, fast-paced environment, working closely with New Zealand on a wide range of issues that reinforce our shared values.

The key responsibilities for this role are:

  • Events logistics lead for Political team, delivering high-level meetings, receptions, logistics for speeches, roundtables, webinars. 
  • Provide policy support to Political Team by providing desk research across the Political team as needed, leading on tikanga and te ao Māori policy, and working with policy leads to provide administrative support for British High Commission sponsored projects and programmes. 
  • Leading stakeholder engagement plan for the Political Team. 
  • First point of resilience for the Visits and Team Co-ordinator Officer during absences or busy periods.  and practical arrangements for events in support of policy objectives.    
  • Other ad hoc team co-ordination and administrative support as needed.

The jobholder may be required to operate outside of their role should there be a crisis affecting the UK and NZ such as a natural disaster which requires the British High Commission to suspend some or all of usual business.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve | Me whakatutukihia:

Events

  • Working to the policy lead, lead on delivering Political Team events such as receptions, speeches, roundtables etc. liaising with venues and caterers, developing the guest list, logistics and invitations, and working with  policy leads and/or the EAs to the British High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner.

Policy Support

  • Conduct desk-based research in support of the range of Political Team policy objectives as directed by policy leads, covering a broad range of domestic policy, foreign and security policy and global issues such as climate change, health and science.
  • Political Team lead for te ao Māori, working closely with the Domestic Policy Team Leader and Māori Engagement Advisor.
  • Provide other policy support as needed, such as administrative support for projects, note taking and circulating papers for meetings.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop a non-Parliament stakeholder engagement plan to diversify the Political Team network, (e.g. academics and the next generation leaders).

Resilience for Team Visits and Co-ordinator Support Officer

  • Support on key duties during absences or busy periods. Key duties include visits, cross team administration (e.g. arrangements for All Staff meetings, arrangements for new and departing team members, administer team budget).

  • Strong collaboration and organisational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong relationship management skills.
  • An aptitude for and interest in public policy and politics

  • Working knowledge and understanding of tikanga and te reo Maori

This role is part-time – 21.75 hours per week excluding lunch breaks.

This role offers scope for flexible working hours including some home working. You will work closely with the Political and Visits Officer (also part-time) with distinct but complementary portfolios. There will be a requirement for occasional and limited out-of-hours work to support major events and visits.

Appointment is subject to a 90 day trial period and gaining and maintaining Posts security clearance requirements.

Open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and partners/dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in New Zealand. Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. Candidates must have or be able to obtain work authorisation for New Zealand in order to apply.
