Main purpose of job:
Contribute to policy and budgetary work in support of the UK objective of a more efficient, effective UN, primarily covering UN reform & management but also Budget analysis, Peacekeeping advice, and supporting the team as needed during General Assembly Fifth Committee negotiations.
The UN sits at the apex of the international system that on the whole has kept the UK and our partners safe and prosperous since 1945. It needs to reform and modernise in order to meet emerging challenges..
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
- Contribute to policy work on UN administrative and budgetary matters, including management reform, helping the UK play a leading role in supporting a more efficient, effective UN.
- During UN Peacekeeping Budget negotiations in May and June, and UN Regular Budget negotiations from October-December analyse budget and performance data and reports in support of UK negotiating positions.
- As a member of the UKMis Fifth Committee team lead on items within the committee as a negotiator, subject to the agenda and programme of work.
- Advise colleagues within the mission on financing and administrative aspects of UN work across a breadth of issues.
- Help organise gatherings of like-minded Member States on UN budgets and reform (for example, aspects of the Geneva Group).
- Contribute to work of the team in support of the delivery of the UKMis business plan.
- Provide administrative support to the team as needed, and any other support needed during General Assembly.
- Committee negotiating sessions (November, December, March, May, June).
The successful candidate will be able to absorb information from UN policy and data reports, providing analysis and policy opinions. They will need to be able to collaborate effectively with colleagues within the team, mission and wider diplomatic community. They will need to have an adaptable approach with a willingness to learn and work flexibly across a broad range of issues as they arise within the UN and UK’s agenda. This may include new areas not covered above, so a proactive, can do, flexible approach is necessary.

- Collaborating & partnering: team-player who can build relationships and work collaboratively with others inside and outside the mission;

- Engaging internationally: ability to promote UK interests with international partners;
- Interest in the UN and policy work;
- Under US State Department requirements, the UK Government in the US may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Permanent Residents or A visa holders with EAD cards*. If you hold a visa other than an A visa you are not currently eligible to work at our office. All selected candidates are subject to background checks and will require a security clearance prior to starting work. *A visas are acceptable at the Embassy and Consulates. Learning and development opportunities:
UKMis has an active Learning & Development Committee, with a budget to support staff training. Staff are encouraged to follow the 70:20:10 model and opportunities for L&D are many and varied, including access to some UN training and language courses.
Working patterns:
We are able to support flexible working practices, including the option for staff to work 2-3 days a week from home subject to business requirements. The team can be very busy during General Assembly Fifth Committee sessions (November-December, March, May-June), which require working outside normal office hours, in line with UN committee negotiations as well as physical presence on some days, which the successful applicant would be expected to meet.
