The British Embassy in Cairo is is seeking an experienced Political and Communications Officer grade B3 (L) to work in the Political Section.

The main purpose of the job is to support a strong UK-Egypt relationship, by providing the embassy with expert analysis and advice on political issues.

The successful candidate will also provide policy and communications support as required. The candidate will work as part of a high performing political team and will regularly provide advice to senior staff in the Embassy.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Reporting on political events and developments in Egypt.
  • Providing written and oral advice and analysis on key policy issues relevant to UK-Egyptian cooperation.
  • Assisting with delivering activity on priority policy areas, including through providing communications support alongside the Embassy communications team.
  • Creating and maintaining a strong network of contacts by building relationships with government, academia, politics and civil society, and supporting Embassy engagement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Providing administrative support to Political Section as required, including on bilateral affairs, and assisting with Embassy events and senior official and ministerial visits from the UK.

  • A degree from a reputable university – preferably a Masters – in a relevant discipline, such as political sciences;
  • A strong understanding of political, security and foreign policy issues in Egypt;
  • A strong and proven ability to build a good and effective network of contacts;
  • Excellent research and briefing skills;
  • Strong organisational skills;
  • Ability to be a team player, flexible, and work to tight deadlines;
  • Computer literate, especially in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and preferably Microsoft Teams;
  • Two years of experience working in a political field;
  • Experience of working on communications, including photo editing and videography.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of USD 1,374 per month subject to insurance and tax as per the usual regulations based on a 36 hours per week. However, employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount. 

We offer a competitive package including medical benefits, performance related bonus, recreational facilities, opportunities for job related training & development, etc. There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

This is for a full time employment, on a fixed term basis, initially for one-year. The contract may be extended for up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory performance and on on-going business requirement.

The British Embassy is committed to helping staff develop in their careers through formal and informal training and coaching. A healthy and active Learning & Development committee supports staff in their goals. In addition, we have access to the substantial amount of resources that the Embassy and UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s International Academy provides.
