Main purpose of job:

To provide analysis of the political situation in Niger based on knowledge and understanding of the political leaders and parties, and of Niger’s laws and institutions of government. To lead on Embassy small projects and programmes, including English Connects and the Chevening Scholarship. To support implementation of the Embassy communications strategy. 

The British Embassy Niamey is new and the Political and programmes role will be essential to helping to the Ambassador to establish their network and understanding of the situation in Niger, as well as to run a new programme of small projects and Chevening/English Connects. Niger. It is an exciting and unique opportunity to contribute to establishing a new Embassy and to ensuring that the UK’s diplomatic presence maximises its potential for positive impact in Niger.

Roles and responsibilities:

Political – Provide analysis of the political situation in Niger and the region for the Embassy and the UK’s regional network to build the Embassy knowledge base and enable the UK to respond to developments appropriately.   Advise the Ambassador and other Embassy staff on engagement with the Nigerien political community.

Political – Research and analysis on other thematic issues as needed by the Embassy, for example: human rights, the terrorist situation, migration and organised crime, to allow the UK to evolve its policy and programme responses in Niger.

Programme management – Lead on the implementation of Embassy programmes including the British Council’s English Connects, the Chevening Scholarship programme, and a new programme of small projects (under £10,000 each) to ensure maximum impact for the UK and for Niger, value for money and transparent management.

Communications – Support to implementation and further development of the Embassy communications strategy to raise positive awareness of the UK’s presence in Niger and to support promotion of UK values, by maximising potential for use of social media, extending the Embassy’s media network, and organising relevant outreach activities.

Wider embassy support – As a full member of the embassy team, the post holder will also make a wider contribution to making the Embassy a friendly and supportive environment to work in. Where necessary, the post holder must be ready to support any other Embassy business (e.g. emergency consular, political or corporate work).

  • In-depth knowledge of the Niger political system and situation;
  • Strong critical thinking skills – an ability to think independently, critically analyse information (including numerical information) and draw out conclusions;
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to work at pace on multiple priorities at the same time, taking the initiative where required;
  • IT literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams and other common software);
  • Social media skills (Facebook, Twitter and other);
  • Ability to work independently and unsupervised, and as part of a wider team;
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject;
  • Fluent French oral and written;
  • Extensive English oral and written.

  • Experience of programme management;
  • Experience of working with the Nigerien government and/or the international community in Niger;
  • Experience of events organisation;
  • Experience of using communications professionally to promote organisations.

Learning and development opportunities:

In addition to on-the-job learning, the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office offers a wealth of Learning and Development (L&D) opportunity (on-line and in person) to help staff pursue their professional development. This includes specific training on eg programme management, communications, international relations.  The successful applicant will be required to undertake a number of mandatory trainings and will then have access to a range of L&D opportunities both in-house and overseas.

Working patterns:

Working hours are from 08:00 – 16:30 Monday to Thursday and 08:00 – 12:30 on Fridays

  • We are aware of the “Nigerien “nationality issues and we are addressing it with IT
  • The starting monthly salary is fixed at XOF 1,344,003 gross per month including 20% guaranteed allowances (non-taxable) as well as payment of a 13th month salary and potential non-consolidated performance bonuses. The Embassy deducts the income tax and CNSS contribution at source and pay them on behalf of the employee. These are calculated according to the provisions set by the Niger CNSS and Tax Inspectorate.
  • Employees who are not eligible to pay local income tax: e.g. certain third-country nationals and spouses/partners of UK diplomats will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
