Main purpose of job:

Lead on day to day delivery of the full range of the Embassy’s political and prosperity objectives, including climate change, working closely with the Deputy Head of Mission and Ambassador.

 

Themes of interest include domestic politics, human rights (including diversity and inclusion), media freedom, transparency and good governance, the business/economic/financial landscape, Covid-19, security and SICA/regional issues. The jobholder will also line manage the Embassy’s Projects and Communications Officer and work closely with the Trade Officer.

 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

 

– Monitor political developments and provide reporting for the Ambassador, Deputy Head of Mission and colleagues in London and elsewhere

– Review and update travel advice for UK citizens visiting El Salvador

– Lead the Embassy’s work on Climate Change and the Environment, including follow up to COP26 and supporting delivery of work in El Salvador (El Trifinio) under the UK’s Biodiverse Landscapes Fund

– Deliver Embassy objectives on other aspects of our prosperity agenda including implementation of the new UK Central America Association Agreement, sharing UK experience on Public Private Partnerships, promoting transparency and good governance and working closely with the Trade Officer and British Chamber of Commerce to strengthen bilateral trade and investment

– Identify and engage with potential project partners to work up and deliver activity in support of priority areas

– Develop and maintain a network of contacts in government, political parties, civil society and wider stakeholders in support of all the above

– Arrange programmes for visitors and deliver Embassy events

– Line manage the Embassy’s Projects and Communications Manager and ensure work in these areas effectively supports Embassy priorities

– Contribute to the smooth running of the Embassy and delivery of wider Embassy objectives

 

Essential on arrival:

·       University educated with at least 2 years’ experience working in a relevant management role in an office or Embassy;

·       Team leadership skills and a record of delivering results, with the ability to bring diverse teams together to work toward common goals;

·       Proven ability to develop relationships with customers and stakeholders;

·       Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;

·       Effective communication skills;

·       Strong IT skills;

·       A good general understanding of the political, business and economic landscape in El Salvador.

Desirable:

·       Previous experience of political reporting, working in/with the private sector and/or managing international projects in El Salvador;

·       Basic knowledge of economics

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
