 Main purpose of job:

To support the High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner in:

  • driving BHC social media to a new level in order to promote BHC activity and improve our visibility;
  • developing, managing and reporting on Projects in support of Post’s strategic objectives;
  • providing high quality political/economic reporting and analysis to deliver a stronger partnership between UK and Belize.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Social Media (45%)

  • Help to plan and deliver integrated strategic media campaign (with PPAO) focussing on social media opportunities.
  • Use social media to promote / advertise BHC activity.
  • Research relevant (and creative) ideas for BHC to publish wider UK initiatives with a view to turning written articles or other content suitable for social media channels. This might include, activities or projects being carried out by partners (CMEP / DFID / 5Cs etc).
  • Monitor our social media communications and campaigns, including activity with target audiences and stakeholders; reporting on the insights and trends gathered so as to inform live campaigns, inform future campaign planning and help us continually improve our output.
  • Monitor key stakeholders (e.g. FCDO, Royal Household, Commonwealth Secretariat, regional UK Embassies etc) Belize Government and other Diplomatic Missions (US, Canada etc).
  • Provide cover for Press and Public Affairs Officer in absence.

Project Management (35%)

  • Strong financial management of all projects to ensure VFM and full implementation of programme funds
  • Provide secretariat function to Project Board Meetings and assist in appraising concept bids.
  • Build a network of contacts across civil society, NGOs and Government to scope out potential partners and identify projects that will further the High Commission’s strategic objectives.
  • Reviewing invoices and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with financial controls.
  • Ensuring timely processing of payments to project implementers.
  • Creating and maintaining a schedule of key project milestones (start/end dates, report due dates, monitoring visits, evaluations) and be responsible for holding project implementers to timescales.
  • Identifying risks including budgetary problems and act proactively to find solutions.
  • Assisting the Deputy High Commissioner in preparing progress reports and evaluating outcomes delivered.
  • Monitoring programme budget and budget forecasting on Hyperion.

 

Political/Economic (20%)

  • Analysis and reporting on domestic politics and policy, particularly human rights and wider social issues; projecting and promoting UK values to deliver a stronger partnership between UK and Belize.
  • Analysis and reporting on domestic economy [with the help of the prosperity Hon Con].
  • Strategic overview – ensure BHC is represented at key cultural / social / significant events.
  • Contribute to briefings for visitors and stakeholders.

  • Fluency in English – oral and written to a professional standard.
  • Previous experience of project management.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Belizean domestic affairs with particular emphasis on human rights, security, justice and political developments.
  • Analytical and reporting skills.
  • Excellent knowledge and working experience of social media platforms.
  • IT literacy especially in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).
  • Must have the legal status to live and work in Belize.

  • Experience in finance and personnel management would be an advantage.
