Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy Santiago is offering two part-time (2) internships to work in the embassy’s Political Team. The Political Team overseas the embassy’s and the British Government’s engagement with Chile’s democratic institutions, political actors and civil society. The intern would take up an engaging and rewarding role to support its work, with a particular focus on the Constitutional Convention and the presidential and congressional elections. The intern will assist in managing contacts, working with FCDO/HMG stakeholders and our likeminded partners, and monitoring Chilean political and social developments (including regional relations).
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
The job holder will:
· Assist the Political team as it follows and reports on political developments both in the Constitutional Convention and the Presidential and Congressional elections, and as it monitors legislative developments in congress.
· Assist with the implementation of the embassy´s political engagement plan (meetings; events; reports; embassy working groups) with the constitutional convention, presidential candidates, Congress, and the next administration.
· Provide general political and administrative support to the Political team, maintaining and updating our political stakeholders database, taking minutes, and assisting with diary management.
· Monitor and analyse breaking political events around priority and emerging issues for the UK government by flagging opportunities and risks. Undertake research on political trends in Chile and in the region.
· Support the Political Officer in helping to align internal FCDO/HMG stakeholders with the Embassy political business plan.
· Support the team with other political work.
Essential on arrival:
· The intern must be enrolled in a university/college programme that will allow them to participate in an internship “práctica profesional”. The individual must have a passion for Chilean politics (including a keen interest in legislative proceedings), UK-Chile relations and/or multilateral and global issues.
· Strong analytical, oral and written skills.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to deal with multiple tasks and priorities.
· Problem-solving, attention to detail and efficient administrative skills.
· Proven research and reporting skills.
· A willingness to work flexibly and as a team player.
· Ability to interact with people at all levels of seniority.
Must currently have the legal right to work in Chile.
Language requirements:
Language: English and Spanish
Level of language required: Fluent Spanish. Ideally business level in both written and spoken English.
Desirable:
The ideal candidate would already have some experience and/or knowledge related to Chilean political dynamics and hold an understanding of legislative, legal, and government workings.

The intern will have the opportunity to take part in the embassy’s learning and development activities. The intern will have a clear L&D plan for their internship, which will include development points.
The intern will work part-time during the internship and required to 20 hours a week with flexible working available to fulfil that commitment. The Embassy working hours are 0900-1730 Mon-Thurs and 0900-1300 on Friday.
