Please note: This is a fixed term position for 1 year with a possibility of renewal.

Main purpose of job:

You will work within the political section at the heart of the High Commission and support the cross-Mission coordination of our work on human rights. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to the UK Government’s understanding of human rights issues in Pakistan through contact building, networking and high-quality analysis, and will help to arrange visits and events in support of our human rights objectives. The successful candidate will also support the Mission’s human rights programming through policy advice and monitoring support.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Political Support: Visit and Events

  • Preparing programmes and logistical arrangements for visits, in particular those focused on human rights.
  • Accompanying and supporting senior staff on visits and meetings within Pakistan and producing records as required.
  • Support to human rights events, including draft guest lists, sending out invites and working with A2 Admin officer to collate RSVPs.

Political Reporting

  • Supporting senior political officer and Political Internal team to produce regular and ad hoc reporting on human rights issues. Providing advice to London on correspondence received about topical human rights issues.

Projects and Programmes

  • Contributing to wider Mission human rights-related programming through policy advice for bids and ongoing support and engagement on programmes.

Political Support: Networking and Managing Contacts

  • Setting up meetings for the Internal Team and the Political Counsellor.
  • Managing, updating and maintaining human rights contacts.
  • Building contacts and engaging with experts to inform and supplement open source research.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to think creatively to solve problems, often under pressure.
  • Willingness to work to frequent and tight deadlines while maintaining high standard of work.
  • Strong I.T skills.
  • Experience of project management and an interest/background in human rights work

Language requirements:

Language: English and Urdu

Level of language required: Excellent command of written and spoken English and Urdu

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

1. Formal in-house and external training.

2. Coaching, mentoring and job shadowing.

3. Structured learning on the job, including stretching objectives and work.

Essential on arrival: Bachelor’s Degree

Desirable: Two years’ relevant experience
